So, without warning, I hear of perhaps the biggest Mellow Gold news of the year. That's right, Michael McDonald (patron saint and photographic icon of Mellow Gold) has come out with a new album! Awesome. You really knocked this one out of the park.

It would be interesting to have a follow up on what ever happened to the (then) unborn fetus that prompted this classic. Did all this pre-developmental attention have any lasting impact? Is s/he a well-adjusted person or a freak? Did s/he ever hang out with Maya Rudolph? Am I the only one longing to find out?

Did they just copy/sample that flute/mellotron part directly from "Daniel", or did someone just rip it off live in the studio. I mean, cripes, that's as bad a rip-off as "Steal Away" borrowing the keyboards almost note for note from "What a Fool Believes".

Also, I have to admit that way back in the day, my band played around with a hard-rock cover of this song, with the lyrics changed to "Having my baby/What a wonderful way to prove that I really did you". Never followed through with it live, though.

You know, I defended The Ank earlier in the week against Jon's diss of "Diana," but this one is just undefendable. And to top it off, I keep thinking of George Segal singing it to Kirstie Alley in "Look Who's Talking" and I ... oops ... just threw up in my mouth a little.

Man, Anka's really getting (and giving!) the shaft this week on Popdose, isn't he? I trashed the beginning of his career on Monday, you trashed the middle years here. What's coming Friday? Maybe we could find some really great videogame creator to conjure a "Give Me a Paul Anka Combover" game! You upload a photo, then see what you'd look like with Anka hair. Combine it with a "Diana/(You're) Having My Baby" karaoke contest--the winner gets a copy of "Rock Swings," second place gets two copies--and the week is complete.

Yuh've had our baby! Many months ago, when I first fell in love with the Mines of Mellow Gold, I wrote in begging you to do this. All through that time I've nurtured the hope that one day I would see Paul Anka's words taken apart in fine style, and I always believed it would happen. You could have swept it from your life, but I knew you wouldn't do it.

The ending of that video is brilliant. When he turned around while singing to face the people behind him, my first thought was, "was this filmed at the Westbury Music Fair on Long Island?" where the stage is in the round and it rotates like a lazy susan. And it was indeed.

I must admit he's aging well...too bad the same can't be said for all of his songs.

Because really, dressed like that, who could blame Gary from takin' a lil' taste? The song reached #1 on the UK singles chart, because, you know, the Europeans are more open-minded about that sort of thing.

Oh, and "My Eyes Adored You" (a #1 hit in 1975) is just a wussy song. Ironically, the next song to hit #1 after this one was "Lady marmalade" by LaBelle, with the lyric "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?" Man sings about never touching a woman, while women sing "Hello, Joe. You wanna give it a go?"

The '70s were truly a confusing time.
