I find myself getting very sentimental over the car trips my family took. Although I didn't really appreciate them as much as a kid, I am now grateful that my parents showed us a great deal of the country by car. My wife and I have really only done one extended car trip with our girls (Detroit to Mount Rushmore and back). It did bring back many of my childhood memories.

My children aren't deprived; they've flown numerous times and even been on a cruise. Sadly, the biggest constraint we face is time. It's become increasingly harder to get two weeks off work. Back in the day, two week vacations seemed the norm. Now, everyone is so tied to work and scared to be away from the office for that period of time. Spending that much time with your family in close quarters, you get to know them in a different way (for better or worse). That seems to be something we are losing in the name of progress.

I'd all but forgotten about Walsh's version of that song. Nice hearing it again!

nice story, i still think the confessor is joe's best overall album. the song i remember the most from a family trip would be hank williams jr. family tradition.
