Great to see it again.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Worst Song - Jim Capaldi. Really? Wow. I thought it pretty good actually. Kind of reminds me of the stuff Steve Winwood was releasing in the 80's. Oh well, to each his own, I guess.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Once again an excellent and surprising selection! Many of these songs never crossed the Atlantic. I have to say some for the best.
Anyway, I'm stealing Luis Cardenas for my own blog, what a find!

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Despite the rather lackluster chart performance, that Jim Capaldi song actually got a LOT of airplay on the AOR and hit music stations in Chicago back in 1983.

Funny how this installment mentions cover versions of "Happy Together" and "Runaway". If you REALLY want to listen to something bizarre, check out Tony Orlando and Dawn's "Runaway"/"Happy Together" medley sometime (starts off as a slow, wannabe-trippy number then veers into the "disco train"... no lie!).

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Oh...for your 80s covers request...Apoptygma Berzerk did an excellent version of Kim Wilde's "Cambodia" on their last album. There are far too many industrial bands doing new wave covers, but this one really stands out.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

A vocal sample from "Love on a Shoestring" spawned a great electronica-pop track a few years ago from the UK duo Bent, called "Magic Love". The album that contains it ("The Everlasting Blink") is highly recommended if you care for that kind of stuff. One song features Jon Marsh from The Beloved on vocals, and David Essex on another.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

I've never been a Stray Cats fan, but I just listened to their version of "Sleepwalk" for the first time and it is damn good. Certainly better than the Carlton version of it above.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Next week is the best of the 15 weeks in my opinion.

Nice, I'm better than google! :)

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

I'll look that one up - thanks.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

There's a great cover of U2's "Pride (in the Name of Love)" by the Soweto Gospel Choir. I think I bought the MP3 on Amazon.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Enjoy the Nitzer Ebb record!

Not a great list, but absolutely worthwhile for the Luis Cardenas song--a few months ago I tried to figure out who did that surprisingly-good cover of "Runaway", but for some reason I couldn't find it with teh Google. So, thanks!

Next week: The Cars? Cheap Trick? Chicago? (I haven't heard "Niagara Falls" in ages...) OH, Peter Cetera...good stuff coming up; I'll stay tuned...

Thanks again!

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Awesome! I thank you for all the effort that you have put into it.

Re: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 14

Random comments:

1) I am totally putting Tony Carey's "West Coast Summer Nights" on my iPod before I leave on my trip to L.A..

2) I can't say that this Capaldi song does a whole lot for me (though I actually kinda like the new-wavey keyboards), but I remember enjoying his "Some Come Running" album, particularly the track "Something So Strong" (not the Crowded House song).

3) The first version of "Sleepwalk" I ever heard was by the Stray Cats, on their underrated "Choo Choo Hot Fish" album. Aside from the original version, theirs is still the one to beat, as far as I'm concerned.

4) I am totally digging Eric Carmen's "Reason to Try." Onto the iPod that one goes as well...
