Popdose: Bottom Feeders: The Ass End of the ’80s, Part 22

That Kasey Casem dedication would totally make it, as there have been many others that are way sappier than that made it to air.

His famous meltdown that you hear from time to time on the radio was a long distance dedication for "shannon" by Henry Gross. It was someone who wanted to dedicate a song to her dead dog.

And E.G. Daily was hot in Valley Girl. If I was Nick Cage I would of hit it.

"Whether real or fake"...Steed, you hit the nail on the head. I've always thought the Long Distance Dedications were the Penthouse Forum of cheese. Some of those stories HAD to be made up--but they still satisfy.

As for E.G. Daily, she means just one thing to me: "There's a lotta things about me you don't know anything about, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you SHOUDLN'T understand"..."I don't understand."

Great column as always, Steed. I like you, Steed. LIKE!

I worked with E.G. Daily. She will always be a "Rugrat" to me.

And to me, she'll always be the prom entertainment as Ricky attempted to seduce the French exchange student. Then we got:

Monique Junot: He keeps putting his testicles all over me.
    Lane Myer: Excuse me?
Monique Junot: You know, like octopus? Testicles?
Lane Myer: Ohhhh. Tentacles. N-T. Big Difference.

Love love love 'If You Let Me Stay'. The best song on the album, and one of the highlights of the soundtrack for the movie 'Peter's Friends', not to mention the 'Hardline' album.

Didn't Terence also sing for INXS for a while?
  • Mike · 1 year ago
He did, very briefly (I think). TTD was badass. I can't quite figure out why he didn't sustain a career in America...well, actually I can. His music was weird, not in the typical "box" that the music industry loves to lump their black artists into, and he had a gigantic mouth. If he'd come out fifteen years later and rapped, he'd be Kanye West. He'd also have been a lot more successful than he actually turned out to be. So I guess this means that in about 2019, Kanye is going to change his name to something we can't pronounce?

Now I'm going to be frog-voicing, "PAGING MISTER HERMAN," for the rest of the day. It's my Oak Tree.
  • RLB · 1 year ago
whoops, that was supposed to be in reply to Jon's comment about Dottie.

God help me, but I just love Paul Davis. Never heard this one before. Sigh.

For some reason, my Smiths-obsessed, Echo & the Bunnymen t-shirt wearing skinny ass LOVED "Walking In My Sleep" when it came out in 84...it was one of those black sheep singles I'd hide under my "Master & Servant" 45 when friends came by, lest my cred be tarnished!

I don't care if it almost instantly become a cutout-bin staple, I still fucking LOVE "Kick the Wall," by Jimmy Davis and Junction, and that profound love always comes flooding back at exactly the same moment in the song: the one minute and twenty-four second mark.

As a regular listener to the classic country station WCMS in the late '70s and early '80s, I've had the lyrics of the chorus to "It's Hard to be Humble" stuck in my head for a couple of decades now.

Lastly, I was legitimately shocked to see that "Rappin' Rodney" never made it out of the lower reaches of the chart. #83? For as well as I remember both the video and the background vocalists from the song, I always figured it was a top-20 hit.

I actually shreiked out loud when I saw "Say It, Say It" today! I owned that single (the 12"-incher, no less) back in the day and still love the song.

And yes, you would have definitely gotten your Long Distance Dedication on AT 40. I'm wiping away a tear as I sing "Disco Duck" in my mind.

Replying to Jeff and Mike's comments: I don't think TTD was ever in INXS, but I seem to recall that he was being considered as lead singer for Van Halen quite a few years ago, during one of VH's feuds with Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth.

Tyrone Davis! Thanks for posting this. The song itself is so-so, the mix is weird ("let's make sure those drums are WAY up front!"), but Tyrone himself just steamrolls over all of it. Cool.

Re: Michael Damian -- It was super-hard to find for a reason! (snerk) There are no words to describe how horribly BAD that cover is.

"After the Fire" was originally supposed to be a Who song that Townshend wanted to premiere at Live Aid. It never happened. However, proceeds from the success of the single went to Live Aid. That album isn't completely terrible. One other note, it was the first time Daltrey worked with Ringo's son (and he's now the drummer for "The Who").

    Great post (as always!).....

fitting sidenote - E.G. Daily is actually currently on the Billboard Dance Club chart with the song "Beautiful"....

I might have written before but I always thought that "Boomtown" was one of the best rock albums of the 80s. Period.

And TTD always reminds me of Chicago (where I lived when I bought the CD when I heard If You Let Me Stay)....

    peace out.

An excellent post! You had me at Mac Davis.

And, glad to see The Tourists made it to your collection... Good stuff, eh?
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Oh, and I forgot... You can write Long Distance Dedications for my imaginary radio station any time you want. Good show!
  • steed · 1 year ago
Thank you. And yes, I don't know why I never owned any Tourists stuff other than a simple 45 - I need to pick up the other albums now too.

These are some great songs! I had forgotten about those Mac Davis tunes. Whatever happened to him? If Billybob can have a singing career, Mac should surely still be acting.

"Walking in my Sleep" was one of my favorite songs from that year. I don't know why. but I always really liked it. Maybe it was the cheesy Miami Vicey saxophone. When I was a kid I picked up this habit from a friend: I used to rate songs and keep my own personal running top-50 in notebooks. Don't hate me because I kept lists.
  • steed · 1 year ago
I have 8000 lists - I'm right there with you.

Ooooooh yes... EG Daily! Wasn't she scrumptious in VALLEY GIRL??? "Say It Say It" was a favorite song of this girl I knew back in my burger flipping days, and I also remember it playing on my alarm clock radio one morning when I really did NOT want to wake up.

I also remember F.R. David's "Words" being pretty popular on "middle of the road" or "pop adult" stations back in '83.
