Mandy Moore's version of "Drop the Pilot" from five years ago is top-notch
  • WHarrisBullzEye · 1 year ago
I think I mentioned this in some other discussion, but I'd actually never heard "Drop the Pilot" until Mandy covered it. Who says cover albums aren't worth a damn? See, they really DO serve to introduce people to songs and artists they might not otherwise have been familiar with.

Mandy's cover record is certainly one of the best I've heard in a long time.

Her version of Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends" is better than the original.
  • DwDunphy · 1 year ago
Robert Palmer's version was pretty good as well.

Oooh, would it be "Jane's Getting Serious" coming up?

What about Joan Armatrading's '(I love it when you) call me names'? That is a great song!

I agree - that was a powerful rock tune. I love "Kind Words (And A Real Good Heart)" as well.

I assume you know Paul Anka is back, more annoying than ever, covering the Killers, etc. He's been fairly upfront about how not being on the charts for about 25 years totally broke his heart because he sure doesn't need the money.

As seems to be the pattern with these lists, a few items did better in Canadia whether due to radio regulations or more affinity for Brit stuff: Not just April Wine, of course, but also the Art of Noise, Adam Ant and Armatrading to some degree. "Right Before Your Eyes" was one two semi-hits America had penned by SCTV brother Ian Thomas:

I didn't know Ian Thomas wrote that song. Even though Dave Thomas was no longer on "SCTV," America performed "Right Before Your Eyes" on the "Jane Eyrehead" episode in late '82:

    Loved the Animotion songs.
  • Matt · 1 year ago
I actually liked the Cynthia Rhodes era Animotion stuff better. Room To Move was a killer track...done originally by Climie Fisher, I think?
  • steed · 1 year ago
You got it - Climie Fisher. I like the Animotion version better.

Didn't know Trevor Horn spearheaded Art Of Noise. I always thought it was Anne Dudley's bugaboo.
  • steed · 1 year ago
I'd bet if you asked Anne, she'd say it was hers. What I always knew about them was Horn was producing something and Dudley was with the band in the studio- and he brought them all together as a group. But seeing that after Horn and Dudley had a falling out and they split - everyone started talking crap about the other guy, I'm sure Horn would say it was his band and Dudley would say it's hers.

Out of the 5 original members involved in the project in the beginning, 3 continued as Art of Noise after the first album, and Trevor Horn was not one of them. He's not involved with "Peter Gunn" as the creative differences had already split the group by then. The bulk of the group had first come together to work on the ABC "Lexicon of Love" album and eventually started working on their own stuff.

The first AON record was made out of bits and pieces from the Yes record that Trevor Horn produced, or so I have been told.

Nobody puts Penny Johnson / Mrs. Richard Marx / replacement lead singer for Animotion in a corner !

And for those of you who simply cannot get enough of Apollonia 6's Sex Shooter, I'm shootin' love in YOUR direction !

Damn you! Quit making me add new songs to my MP3 player!

Just kidding. Thanks for all the great work and songs. . .

To Ambrosia's defense: I really dig Endings from Road Island...but the rest is really weak.

The sultry rapper on "Strip" is Frida from ABBA.

I may be one of the few that April Wine may have "impressed" with their Power Play album. Enough is Enough is a pretty decent tune, as is the last track on side 1 (Waiting on a Miracle). They apparently raised a few eyebrows with If You See Kay (hmmmmm, say it aloud, doesn't that spell.... ?) before the album vanished into the sunset. I managed to snare a CD copy during the very short time Capitol had it issued, still play it every now and then.
