Popdose: Bride of Popdose: A Wedding Songs Mixtape

  • BobCashill · 5 months ago
Only Jon would date his wedding to the "tail end of the VH1 Country era." That's why I love the guy. Fifteen years? A staggering accomplishment--best to the still-happy couple from the best man.

One other song I remember we picked for my own wedding in 2005: Mary Chapin Carpenter's cover of John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me." We are indeed growing old.
  • hemisphire · 5 months ago
Hey, we chose that version of "Grow Old With Me" for our wedding in 2004 as well. We also had a guy from a local band (emmet swimming) play some tunes, then we put on a 4 CD mix that I put together (with vetoes from my wife).
  • BobCashill · 5 months ago
    It's a nice song.

Funny thing about Pachabel's "Canon." My wife and her mom spent hours trying to find the right version for our wedding. After the umpteenth rendition I called it quits and took a long nap. When I got up--they were still at it.

Wow, my proposal to Kelly is out there for the whole world to see. I hope she doesn't say no...
  • JonCummings · 5 months ago
Me, too. A Popdose wedding -- just think of it! We'd have to have a "very special" day on the site -- and even as you stood at the altar, you'd be able to hear the keystrokes of 18 fellow columnists snarkily live-blogging the event.
  • Arend_Anton · 5 months ago
Yeah, but remember I wasn't going to invite you in the first place.

Also, my Prop 8 protest is still on going.
  • EightE1 · 5 months ago
This is an AWESOME idea! Kelly -- say, "Yes!"

I can't wait to read the "How Bad Can It Be - The Honeymoon" column.

Only if you sign a pre-nup. If we get divorced, my books, records and movies are mine. But you can have the wagon-wheel coffee table.
  • Arend_Anton · 5 months ago
But my beers keep falling through the openings between the spokes!
  • KellyStitzel · 5 months ago
You're supposed to keep the glass top on it, silly. This marriage is already doomed.
  • DwDunphy · 5 months ago
Hey, behbeh. I got one word for you, just one word... IKEA.
  • KellyStitzel · 5 months ago
We are all getting my "When Harry Met Sally" reference, aren't we?
  • DwDunphy · 5 months ago
Probably not. After North, I had my brain wiped a'la Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and all the Rob Reiner movie references got flushed. Except for "Smell The Glove" and "This goes to 11"...

Oh crap, it's all coming back to me now.
  • Arend_Anton · 5 months ago
All I have to say is that everyone will want what you're having.
  • KellyStitzel · 5 months ago
That's better. Arend, there might be hope for us after all.
  • EightE1 · 5 months ago
God, you two are made for each other. I'm getting all verklempt ...
  • KellyStitzel · 5 months ago
It is a moving love story, isn't it?
  • EightE1 · 5 months ago
    It's certainly ... um, original ...
  • DwDunphy · 5 months ago
    Oh it's something alright.
  • EricL · 5 months ago
If I may suggest a song for the wedding...

This is what I get for not checking my Popdose E-mail enough. For the record, my wife and I had our first dance to "The Best Thing About Me Is You," by Jeffrey Foskett with Marshall Crenshaw and Bill Lloyd. It was a left-field choice, to be sure, but how can you argue against a song with that title and these lyrics?

I never knew there was so much to miss
Or that I'd end up like this
    Thinking of someone else
Before I ever got around to thinking of myself
These days, I'm living for those moments
When we are lying in each others' arms
I'm so in love with every little thing you do
The best thing about me is you
  • JonCummings · 5 months ago
Nice! How DID you get left out of this? I was thinking the whole time I was compiling this, "I bet Will would have something fine to say on this topic..."

I've never heard that track. Sounds awesome, though. I bet you'd also have some good contributions for my next compilation-post idea: Bizarro songs we sing as lullabies to our kids.
  • WHarrisBullzEye · 5 months ago
It's my own fault. I keep meaning to switch my Popdose Google Group so that it sends my e-mails to my Bullz-Eye address, and I just haven't done it. But, yes, I'm totally down for the lullabies post!

I just found out today that Crenshaw just released a new album. How did I miss that?!
  • jefito · 5 months ago
Shit, is that out already? I thought it was still on the schedule.
  • jefito · 5 months ago
I just checked -- it doesn't come out 'til Tuesday. It's called "Jaggedland," and it's coming out on 429 Records, home of the ugliest album artwork on the planet.
  • DwDunphy · 5 months ago
Odd. I saw it in a local store tonight (but didn't have the money.) I guess they jumped the gun.

And yeah, that cover is as plain as can be, but Crenshaw has this weird thing going where he looks older, but also looks just the same as always.
  • DavidMedsker · 5 months ago
I really need to hit the Popdose Google group more, because I would have loved to contribute to this.

My wife and I danced to "You're the Best Thing" by the Style Council. We celebrate our ten-year anniversary this September. I'm a lucky guy.
  • JonCummings · 5 months ago
Guys, if you've got something to say, go ahead and say it! Just, for crying out loud, don't go on as long as Jason did.
  • WHarrisBullzEye · 5 months ago
For my part, I will only add that the following:

    1. We walked into our reception to "It's Not Unusual" and tremendous applause. My wife said that, for a moment, she felt like a rock star. I knew exactly what she meant.
    2. For the mother-son dance, I threw all pretense of coolness out the window and unabashedly selected the Backstreet Boys' "The Perfect Fan." I stand by that selection. Because she is.
    3. Jenn and I had established a do-not-play list for the DJ. Unfortunately, half of my damned friends are either musicians, music critics, or former record store employees, so they could come up with things that never occurred to me...which is how I somehow ended up dancing to "I'm Too Sexy." But on the other hand, I think I made about twenty bucks in the process.
  • DavidMedsker · 5 months ago
I had a do-not-play list, too, and my groomsman Steve conned the DJ into playing the #1 song on the list: "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang. Turned out to be the biggest hit of the night.
  • DwDunphy · 5 months ago
Sometimes I think people save themselves just for weddings to hear certain songs. For instance, the place goes NUTS for the Chicken Dance. What the frijole?!
  • DavidMedsker · 5 months ago
In this case, everyone went nuts to "Celebration" because they knew that we didn't want to hear it. We all embraced the cliche.

I was at a wedding this month that used Randy Newman's "Fells Like Home" as the bride and groom's first dance song. I knew the song, but that's the first time I'd remembered hearing it used at a wedding reception. It did have an impact as a lot of people were asking what the song was and who did it. This was a young couple in their mid-20's, so I was somewhat surprised. Never got a chance to ask them what the significance was for them.

Thanks for sharing your sweet stories and songs. It's such a big decision for an audiophile: the soundtrack for this most poignant occasion. And I love that Kelly has a 'never, but...' song and Dunphy has an 'if' song. Very cool.
Congrats to the anniversaries and milestones big and small.

I've never been married. I'll never get married. But there always is a long shot, if I could find someone who also thought David Sylvian's "Brilliant Trees" was one of the best love songs ever written:

    And there you stand
    Making my life possible
Raise my hands up to heaven
    But only you could know

My whole world stands in front of me
By the look in your eyes
By the look in your eyes
My whole life stretches in front of me
    Reaching up like a flower
Leading my life back to the soil

Not that I contribute to the site, but I walked down the aisle to "Going to the Chapel", Elvis burst into the "chapel" because my fiancé couldn't continue the vows without him (almost gave my dad a stroke), elvis sang "Love me Tender" and on our way out of the chapel, he sang "Viva Las Vegas" (guess where the wedding was). We walked into the reception to "something to talk about" and danced to "at last" (EJ's version). It was a half traditional and half Vegas style. After 13 years, people still talk about it.
  • Xavier · 5 months ago
Criminy, how could you neglect "This must be the place (naive melody)" from the Talking Heads?!
  • Arend_Anton · 5 months ago
    Good pick!

My wife and I had John Lennon's "Grow Old With Me" sung at our wedding. I can't remember what the first dance was...something by Kenny Rogers (my wife's choice...it was 1985!)

If I had it to do all over again, we would dance to "Only With You" by The Beach Boys. Hate Mike Love if you must, but his lyrics for this song are very nice....plus some nice moody lyrics from Dennis and a great vocal from Carl

When my partner and I were lining up at the front of the hall, my DJ had on the Black Velvet Flag cover of Institutionalized. I guess that can define our relationship....
