I didn't know Rutger Hauer could sing!"</p><p>Columbia Pictures had a field day with this movie, but at first there was almost zero confidence in it. There was a lot of competition at the box office that year, so the studio decided to offer a free matinee on either Memorial Day or 4th of July (I can't remember which.) Free is a good price, but what sealed the deal was that it was <i>hot as balls</i> that summer all across the country. Theaters all around were packed but it's debatable whether it was for the "wax on, wax off" or the air conditioning.</p><p>The strategy worked, I suppose. Those who didn't get in on the free screening paid to go see it, their reasons being their own. I can't imagine there being serious peer pressure about this.
