Popdose: CD Review: The Lemonheads, “Varshons”

The G.G. Allin cover is one of my favorites.....I enjoyed this disc quite a lot, which is funny since I wasn't looking forward to it at all when I heard about it last year. I highly recommend that people should snag this, and also snag the previous self-titled album, which I think ranks right up there with Come On and Ray from "back in the day."

"The Lemonheads" really is good, though it's too bad four of the best songs on it aren't written by Dando. I wonder if Bill Stevenson, who wrote "Become the Enemy" and "Steve's Boy," will be involved on the next set of original Lemonheads songs.

Something tells me that in typical Dando fashion, the answer will be no. He was allegedly supposed to play on and produce the "next album," according to a 2007 interview.

It was cool getting to see both Bill and Karl on the second round of touring that Dando did for the last record - they really made the entire Lemonheads set thump in a way that didn't happen when I first saw Dando and the previous touring lineup during the initial touring for "The Lemonheads" album.

Dando has said that "Varshons" was finished by May of '08, and there were definitely rumors that it was going to come out last September. But apparently Vagrant didn't want to put it out, which is why The End released it. Dando says he bought an expensive painting and then realized he'd have to put out a new album and tour behind it in order to pay for the painting. But he didn't have any new songs, which is how an all-covers album came about. Now he's saying that the NEW new album is finished as well, but I doubt it'll come out before the end of the year.
