Popdose: CHART ATTACK!: 8/1/92

Hey! No JoCo shoutouts without a link!

This chart proves that contrary to popular opinion, Nirvana changed nothing.

I can't believe the Cover Girls actually had a fairly substantial career! Their first single was what, 85 or 86? I'm going to guess that there were different Cover Girls for each record.

If MTV banned a song today, would anyone notice? I remember when that used to be part of the formula for radio stardom (George Michael and Madonna in addition to Mix-A-Lot, who else?)

I saw Tom Cochrane open up for The Smithereerns around this time. The Smithereens were awesome and in great spirits because "Top of the Pops" had just gone Top 40. But the crowd was dead after Cochrane, who closed the set with "Highway."

(No matter what music you're into, if you have a chance to see the Smithereens live, go! I'm seen them god knows how many times and they're always great. I'm not even a fan!)

The Nirvana venom was most effective against glam/pop metal bands.

Another goddamn classic. Well done sir. The Boyz II Men stuff had me on the floor. Still there.

I laughed when I saw this comment

Two weeks ago, we covered a summer week in 1974, and I received some very nice comments from people reminiscing of their childhoods. So this is the week where I completely ruin all that nostalgia and hit a current year.

Hmmm circa high school is current? I still consider 1992 part of my childhood especially because my parents never bought me music when I was an actual child. By Jr. and High I was getting it for myself so thank you for the dose of genuine nostalgia.

I'm with you -- I was in high school in '92. I think Popdose
readership tends to skew a little older, though -- the charts in the
'70s and '80s usually get lots of comments, whereas people seem less
familiar with '90s charts. '92 is probably the last year I have any
familiarity with, so unless I'm looking for a real challenge, this is
probably as "current" as we're gonna get around here.

Where oh where can I find a copy of Tom Cochrane's "Big League" on MP3? Thanks for reminding me of that song - awesome.

I always liked Tom Cochrane, both solo and with Red Rider. I think everybody liked "Life is a Highway" when it first came out. It's suffered a little backlash because it's been used in just about every commercial and movie trailer over the last 15 years.

As for "Big League", try this:

Oddly enough, I will be in Philly in a couple weeks, but just passing through on the way to the Jersey shore. Thanks for the offer though, I do love the cheesesteaks.

Jon Secada has been during the last 3 years a judge in Latin American Idol. He still looks freaky!
  • DwDunphy · 3 months ago
Might have been all the nitrates in my diet around that time, but I always thought Secada could have made a decent replacement vocalist in Foreigner. His range is about right and "Just Another Day" always bore a glancing resemblance to "I Want To Know What Love Is" to me.

Wasn't the G'n'R/Elton John deal played a show of support by Elton, in the wake of all the crap Axl took (deservedly) for the racist & homophobic stuff in "One in a Million"?

Can't believe "Lunatic Fringe" only reached #11 on the rock-radio chart. Loved that song, and they still play it all the time on classic-rock radio.
  • DwDunphy · 3 months ago
That makes this the perfect time to say you can find "Lunatic Fringe" right here, this week!

Life Is A Highway.... great example of an unforgettable chorus wedded to a completely forgettable verse.

"Playground", "End of the Road", and "Give You My Heart" (also from Boomerang) were played on the radio constantly as I took a marathon road trip from Syracuse to Cherry Point NC and BACK within two days. The En Vogue track is probably the one true classic on this list, though. Most of the other stuff was either the one big hit for an artist (Secada, Mix A Lott, Cochrane), or a flashy gimmick song (Madonna, Guns, Boyz).
  • BobCashill · 3 months ago
"Playground" is completely anemic, not at all 40s. Madonna's Sondheim-penned songs for DICK TRACY/"I'm Breathless" are closer to the mark.
