Popdose: CHART ATTACK!: 8/19/89

Best Chart Attack ever - more non sequiturs, please.

Yes...that non sequitur was quite a doozy. I had to actually look up thalidomide and find out what it was...I'm pretty sure my 9th grade history teacher explained it back in '89-'90 when "We Didn't Start the Fire" was popular...but...who the hell remembers things they learned in history class in 9th grade? All I remember is wondering why the kid next to me would take his shoes off and go to sleep in class.

At any rate, while I wouldn't call the majority of the songs on this list great pieces of music, the fact is that I have a soft spot for most of 'em. Except for "Hangin' Tough". Even as a card-carrying NKOTB fan (who is paying cash money to see them in concert next month), I will readily admit that "Hangin' Tough" might be the worst record of the 1980s.

I was all ready to make a snarky comment about Richard Marx and "Right Here Waiting", then I sang the song in my head and realized I know...every...single...word. I need help.

I've always thought 1989 was the Worst Year Ever for pop music. I can't remember a time when cassettes were so vitally important--in the car, on the subway--just to avoid being forced to listen to the radio.

The non-sequitur is a fantastic addition to your repertoire, though...

Exactly, Jon. I click on the links above thinking, 'it can't be as bad as I remember it being' and they're even WORSE!!

Good to have you back, Jeff. My memories of that horrible Richard Marx song are tied up with the 6th grade talent show, in which a pair of massively tall girls in fringe-heavy cowgirl outfits did a synchronized roller skating routine to that song. It was...awesome.

Lovely run-on sentence. William Faulkner would have been proud.

1989 was the year I graduated high school, and there was so much bad music on the charts that pretty much the whole senior class converted to Deadhead-ism. We had a giant steal your face painted on the cafeteria window with 'class of 89' under it. Jocks, band geeks, misfits of all shapes and sizes listened to the Dead during senior study hall.
But the Love & Rockets So Alive cassette single did see heavy rotation in the tape deck of my first car that summer too...

Well, this is where we differ. I want to talk about Gloria Estefan ALL the time.

In fact, I'm thinking about her right now.

"Hi, Gloria. How are you today ? What a nice poncho you have on. Pretty."

The "Cold Hearted" video is indeed Paula's shining moment in terms of videos...the idea however is completely borrowed from the 1979 film "All That Jazz" starring Roy Scheider. There is a dance routine called "Take Off With Us" that involves scaffolding, pulling shades, stripping, shining lights, and yes...all done in front of producers who are gasping at the suggestive moves. Recommended viewing as it makes this look tame by comparison.

Nice to see New Jack Swing represented. The word is finally entering the general lexicon of pop culture. GREAT.

Good memories as I met my wife around this time.

I am also guilty of putting a lot of this crap out on the street that summer. One of my summer jobs was at Record Town in Nashua,NH. Sold tons of Dino cassettes, Lots of NKOTB, Paula. Me and another guy used to break oopen cassettes and play them over the sysytem in the store. Herb Alpert and the TJ Brass blasting away...Or Hocus Pocus by Focus for laughs. Also met my wife here.

The New Jack Swing. Hmmmm I see lycra bike pants, and can also here the "Orchestra Hit" sample from every bad keyboard... Dun...Dun,,Dun Dun Dun Dun...The dun is the Orchestra hit. Play it in the keys, Do ya know what I'm talking about.

I still remember the summer not coming together and feeling right with this soundtrack to summer. Now 84...that was a great summer for tuneage
