Popdose: CHART ATTACK!: 9/20/69

You know, announcing that you "juggle various balls on a daily basis" is not going to do much to discourage people from questioning your sexuality. And frankly, such rampant promiscuity is potentially dangerous to your health.

How could you guys have possibly passed on the potential to put a Garth Brooks/Chis Gaines video in this week's Chart Attack!? Didn't he/they "cover" "Get Together"?

Man, is that Stephen Stills on stage with Jesse Colin Young, Jackson Browne, et al. at the MUSE concert for the video of "Get Together"? He looks like a drugged-out, crazed, balding, psychotic Republican banker. The mid-1970s were a harsh time for him. Wow.

I like the realism of Veronica(?) playing the Hammond. Everybody forgets the pedals on a organ.

For that I give them props.

That Three Dog Night clip wasn't a promotional video - it was from a short-lived prime-time TV show on ABC called "The Music Scene," which was noted for putting their guest performers in front of goofy set designs.

Great stuff here, Jason! The Chicago music charts at that time were pretty interesting too. Although it didn't make the national Top 10 (but spent a few Top 10 weeks on both WLS and Super CFL), another great tune from that week was "You, I" by The Rugbys, a one-hit wonder from Nashville (of all places!) that sounds suspiciously close to Rare Earth.

Hey I have no problem admitting, in front of you and everybody, that I LIKE Sugar Sugar. Although it's troubling to learn that I agree with Bush on something, this song is too sweet to despise. That's like trying to hate a kitten. Instead, just smile as it warms your heart!

Everybody sing along! Oh Honey, (ba-ba-BA-bap--BAH BAH) awww Sugar Sugar (ba-ba-BA-bap--BAH BAH) You are my candy, girl, and you've got me wanting you!

Besides, where would Def Leppard be without the fantastic coda: "Pour a little sugar on me honey! Pour a little sugar on me baby!"

Also, it was co-written by the great Andy Kim!!!! I think I'll listen to it again now. (Though, when it comes to the songs on my "Archies Greatest Hits" album -- suck it, Jeff! -- my personal favorite is still "Bang Shang-a-Lang.")

A week in 1969 when CCR wasn't planted at #2 -- what an anomoly! (They had five #2s total -- three in '69 alone, including this one -- but never made it to #1.)

Yeah, Suck It Jeff. Sugar Sugar is a terrific song. Lots of energy, dynamic lead vocals and so damn simple and catchy it's irresistible. And it's so sweet, diabetics are warned not to listen to it. Besides, that Bobby Sherman track is about 100 times more sickening than Sugar Sugar.

Thanks for not snarking on CCR. Man, what a phenomenon. Why hasn't there been some kind of CCR biography movie done? It's a fascinating story.

Your assessment of Johnny Cash is spot-on. He was one badass mofo.

I'd personally rather listen to Sugar Sugar than about half of the other tracks on this top 10, including the silly Johnny Cash song (even if I love Mr Cash). And count me as another person who loves "Bang Shang-a-Lang", stupid chorus and all.

"Get Together" just makes me think of every late 60's/Summer of Love/stereotypical hippie montage/commercial that ever makes it onto cable. "Is that freedom rock? Well turn it up, man!"

Ditto on the "Sugar Sugar" love from everybody else here. It's the "Stairway to Heaven" of bubblegum music.

Yeah, I'm a wimp, but I like it too.
