I still sorta like it cause the vocals are amazing but It is not representative of her work.

DId she not "show the pain" on songs like "What's the matter here" which was about child abuse or in "Wonder" which was about her recovery from spinal meningitis? And Carnival was such an edgy song that serial killer Aileen Wuornos asked that it be played it her funeral.

Don't make light of people just because you don't understand them.

Re: Chartburn: 5/9/08

What, no love for Mungo City????? "Space is the Place" is a good bit of dry wit and blunt profanity, and "Ship Wrecked" is a good tale of alienation that's surprisingly warm, avoiding all the cliches.

Yes, I had a Natalie Merchant crush. I once had good seats at a Maniacs show and saw a guy I knew in the FRONT row exchanging sign language with her. I think I beat him up later. In any case, this is a great song.

Re: Chartburn: 5/9/08

"4) I thought JG said 'I wanna be your fairweather friend' as well, until I listened through headphones a few months ago. It sucks when you've been singing a song one way for 17 years only to find out you've had the words wrong all this time..."

Sure does. But I continue to sing these songs from long ago the way I always have, "correct" lyrics be damned.

"hey, was that Nia Peeples at the beginning of the clip?"

It looks like her, doesn't it? She had a dance show that aired after "Arsenio" in many markets around 1989-'90, didn't she?

"I love both versions, but the LP version is superior."

Thank you, sir, for backing me up. I could never get into the remix myself, though; I thought it took a lot of the energy out of the song. I'd forgotten all about the female dancers in the video until I saw it again. Nice work, casting director!

Re: Chartburn: 5/9/08

Friggin' amazing. Jeff broke them up specifically to coincide with the publication of this week's Chartburn. Impressive, no?

Re: Chartburn: 5/9/08

1) Nice! I click on this exactly five minutes after I read the gossip page of the NY Daily News to find out that Liv & Royston have split! Or, I at least think it's Liv. Is Mia Tyler married to a rock singer?

2) "Our Time in Eden" is the only Maniacs album I own. I always thought these guys (and girl) were a bit too serious, although I'll give them credit for introducing me to the beauty that is "More Than This" about five years before "Lost in Translation" and about seven years before I discovered Bryan Ferry.

3) I remember having to sing "Friends & Lovers" in 6th grade music class. Looking back, that may have been a wee bit inappropriate. Still, I (sadly) still remember every single word of this song and truth be told, I kinda have a soft spot for it.

4) I thought JG said "I wanna be your fairweather friend" as well, until I listened through headphones a few months ago. It sucks when you've been singing a song one way for 17 years only to find out you've had the words wrong all this time...hey, was that Nia Peeples at the beginning of the clip?

Anyway, Jam & Lewis produced the original version of "Rub" (which sounded nothing like a Teddy Riley production), but this remix was produced by Eddie F. of Heavy D & The Boyz. Since Teddy worked on a lot of Heavy D's stuff, that probably accounts for the similarity in sound. I love both versions, but the LP version is superior.

5) Oh Cher...as a card-carrying gay dude, I'm supposed to be in love with her, but aside from a couple isolated moments, I generally have no use for her music. But speaking of that "If I Could Turn Back Time" video, how skeevy is it that the blond guitarist she's damn near dry-humping in the clip is her kid?? No wonder he grew up to front a shitty band.

That is all for now :-)

Re: Chartburn: 5/9/08

Wow. Carl Anderson was a cast member of the classic "Cop Rock". That was a historically bad idea.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...
