yeah i read this too, and i was happy to see also on youtube that 'one more time' was getting tons of plays and new appreciation from young people that never would had a clue about this song.

I'm a member of an email JJ group, and his manager responded to criticism about the Taco Bell ad last year. He basically said he jumped at the chance to get Joe's music back on the minds of the gen-x demographic on a national level, and make Joe a little bit of cash in the process.

I just (Weds.) saw Petty and the HB's in NJ. I've made the Fogerty connection myself. Both of those guys could play 40 songs and for every one you'd go "Oh yeah! I love that one!"
Great live show. TP was in great voice, but I swear he was smoking pot through the whole set. He kept going back to the drum kit and taking a toke on something. By the encore he looked stoned and did a rambling rap during a RIPPING version of "Gloria".

There's a video for "Real Men"? Who knew...Love that song!!

My fandom button for Joe Jackson went from "really like" to "absolutely f-in' love" when I heard his cover of "The Harder They Come", which is arguably better than Jimmy Cliff's original.

I love "Second Chance". Actually, it's the only 38 (Thirty Eight) Special song I can recognize besides "Hold On Loosely". Yeah, so I'm a wuss. And apparently I like those "hey, I cheated but I'm human so please forgive me" songs a lot because I think "Human" is an amazing fucking song.

...and didn't Treach do porn for a while?

Petty does some great voice work on "King of the Hill" as Lucky, Luanne's dimwitted husband who won a settlement from Costco after he "slipped on some pee-pee" in the store's bathroom. The settlement was between $20,000 and $50,000, but Lucky is convinced he'll never have to work again.

I, too, am looking forward to your review of Krauss & Plant. I saw the MTVHD concert hour with footage of their live show and was dismayed (a little -- I don't really care all that much) to see that it ended up being Plant running the show, with Krauss almost as his backup singer. It was like "The Robert Plant Bluegrass Experiment ... (featuring Alison Krauss). Hopefully, it's not that way on tour.

Thank you, Matthew. I thought I was the only one who remembered Petty's appearance on Shandling's show. My favorite moment of that episode was when Garry was talking to Grant about appearing in a school performance of Fiddler On The Roof, and Petty wound up mentioning the names of Tevye's five daughters.

Night And Day is one of my very favorite records . . . I discovered Joe Jackson out of order. First, I saw him perform his Heaven and Hell album on Sessions at West 54. Then, I heard his first two records. I still remember buying a used copy of Night and Day and listening to it in my car and after about a minute of "Another World", I knew I was hearing something unique and brilliant. If you held a gun to my head and made me choose a favorite Joe Jackson album, this would be it--- amazing songwriting----amazing production.

wow- that will be quite a string of shows. You must give us a review on the Plant/Krauss show. ( I hope it's good, since they are delaying the LZ Reunion for it).

I have a Journey/Heart/Cheap Trick- Foreigner/Bryan Adams-Eagles- Springsteen summer coming up, so I am doing my part as well.

Great songs here. Apart from Dot-Three-Eight Special. Were they still employing two drummers at that point? Why? They did some solid Southern rock ballads back in the day, but you might as well have handed this song to Michael Bolton.

Utterly impossible to say a bad word about "Steppin' Out."

Oh, I'll be there. As it turned out, we threaded the needle and will be seeing all three shows--just not on the same night. Plant/Krauss Monday at the Greek, Petty Wednesday at the Bowl, and Michael Friday in Anaheim.

SOMEBODY's got to keep the touring economy propped up...

I love both Mr Petty and Oasis, and while I would say that Petty has written better songs, Oasis are waaaaay better at being rock stars.

The whole point of rock stars is to strut around, acting like a dick, claiming to be the best band in history, make a couple of fantastic records and then collapse in flames and chaos. This is why GnR will always be better than Bon Jovi.

When I lived in Africa, there was a cheezy ballad singer from Cote d'Ivoire named Frost. He wore a flannel shirt and a cowboy hat, and his big local hit was a cover of "Second Chance," but with a different title and completely different lyrics (this was in 1998, by the way). The lyrics were in Djula (local African language). I recognized the melody instantly, but had no idea what he was singing, and had no idea who did this original.

Ten years later I come here and discover it's Thirty-Eight Special. Now I can't hear their version without hearing Frost's version. And I also can't help but wonder what happened to the guys who did "Hold on Loosely" and "Rockin' into the Night."

Wikipedia says the guy who sang "Second Chance" (Max Carl) is now in the current lineup of Grand Funk Railroad. How unfunky they must be.

If memory serves, Peterik was writing for .3Eight Special from damn near the beginning – "Rockin' Into The Night" was a Survivor throwaway.

And Tom Petty could kick Liam Gallagher's ass with one bandana tied behind his back.
