Popdose: Cutouts Gone Wild!: Gregory Abbott, “I’ll Prove It to You”

Ahhhh, Gregory Abbott. Back in late '86/early '87, when "Shake You Down" was a hit, I was living with my mom & stepdad in Southfield, MI, and that song came on the radio every 15 minutes, it seemed like. Because of the song's ubiquity (and the fact that I was 10 and didn't appreciate the song's sex appeal), I grew to despise Gregory Abbott and all his green-eyed, smooth Philip Michael Thomas-ness. In retrospect, though, "Shake You Down" is pretty good as far as "Sexual Healing" ripoffs go. And he even had a decent follow up with "I Got The Feelin' (It's Over)" (which was damn near the exact same song).

What does that have to do with "I'll Prove It To You"? Well...not much. I think I might have seen the title track on BET's Video Soul once or twice. Considering how bad the album flopped, I hope that either Gregory held on tightly to that "Shake You Down" money or he found his way back to being a stockbroker or whatever the hell he was before.

Mike, good call on Abbott's Philip Michael Thomas-ness. I was about to say that he should've gone into acting with a face like that. To paraphase Tim Meadows from a mid-'90s "SNL" sketch I vaguely remember, "That is one handsome black man."

    Very funny post, Jeff.

The last 25 seconds of that video.
    Holy crap.

I know someone who went to see a Gregory Abbott show around the time "Shake You Down" was, uh, shaking down. She was a huge fan of the song and the album from whence it came. To hear her speak of Gregory Abbott was to imagine her complete willingness to let him be a walkaway baby-daddy.

After the show, she pretty much said "Gregory Abbott is the biggest douchebag to walk the earth." So much for smoothness, a-whale a-whale...

    Best part of that post:

Check out that cover. Doesn’t it look like the kind of thing you’d expect to see underneath a layer of dusty cellophane on a truck stop counter carousel? The only thing missing is a bright yellow circle promising “ORIGINAL RECORDINGS BY THE ACTUAL ARTIST.”

That reminded me of my touring days!

Whew, funny post. You had the ol' piss-n-vinegar pedal all the way to the floor on this one.

OK I'd like to post a comment refuting the claims that Greg is "an egomaniacal dick" or a "douchebag."
I am related to him in a complicated, convoluted way, but not actually that distant.
Anyway, to get to my point, once he and his wife came to visit us at my grandma's house and they were both REALLY nice people; I have nothing bad to say about them.
They had dinner with us and they watched the first Fantastic Four movie with us and my younger sisters. They really were just the nicest people.
And to reply to DwDunphy, sorry about your friend's experience, but she has to understand that he was probably busy and not being able to give her his undivided attention does not make him a douchebag.
Please do not insult someone you know little about.
