There's more experimentalish stuff like "Sled Dog" on the album it came from, Free Flying Soul. Good stuff.

Great to see the choir mentioned, but they seriously need a more in depth post, whether it be a popdose guide or a why you should like... post. They have made some fantastic music, both with the choir but also with their other projects (the lost dogs <derri> and the "at the foot of the cross" records. Personally, circle slide never connected with me, but Free Flying Soul (which includes "sled dog") and especially Wide Eyed Wonder are great albums that deserve a wider audience. Dw, I would love to see you bring more good CCM to light (or good music that happens to be made by christians), because there is a LOT out there (I.e. Mark Heard, 77's, pierce pettis, terry taylor, steve taylor, swirling eddies, etc. etc. ) Sounds like a great new column idea to me!

I guess you never heard the one about how to write a Christian-rock song: You start with a secular rock song, and every time the lyrics say "baby," you substitute "Jesus."

Huh. I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed. I've been curious about the Choir since hearing "Sled Dog" on an mp3blog a few years ago, hoping that the rest of their stuff was as bizarre and wonderful.

If the tracks you've posted are more representative, then I'm afraid this band's not really my thing—a bit too plodding and earnest for me, like Toad The Wet Sprocket with a head cold.

I still love "Sled Dog," but I guess it's a one-off.

Count me among the devoted fans of this underrated band. Caught Derri and Steve just before Christmas as part of a last-second L.A.-area Lost Dogs show. That this night saw them perform with consummate class to a solid dozen people (very few having any idea who they were) was both astounding and mystifying. All twelve walked away fans though.
