That was the most boring evening of TV ever. Thank god we live in CA, so it ended in time to watch stupid network TV after. Your coverage was MUCH more interesting than the actual speeches.

I admit that it was tough to stay awake -- and it was all over by 9pm (PDT).

I was hoping you guys would tackle the speeches I heard on the radio just before Laura spoke. There was a salute to a asthmatic-but-driven Navy Seal who jumped on a grenade, causing his death and presumably saving his partners. That followed an officer who lost a foot and an eye in Iraq due to an extremely rare blood disease - but who told us she believed in making every day better than the one before.

No disrespect to either of the individuals, but I couldn't figure out what they conveyed about GOP policy. That the GOP is taking time to applaud fallen and damaged troops, and the Dems presumably aren't? That because they're honoring these heroic people, the McCain platform must therefore be noble? That the officer and the Seal's family are at the convention, so maybe our presence in Iraq isn't as bad as some might think?

I'm reaching for reasons, because the line between these individuals and the GOP policies wasn't clear. Seemed like grand scale opportunism and exploitation, pushed to the front proudly.

Well, that's just SOP for the GOP. Last night during the major speeches, their video wall only occasionally featured gigantic images of the young John McCain. The rest of the time it featured a huge Fox logo--whoops, I meant American flag.

Eliciting a Pavlovian response from voters whose loins are stirred by the sight of a heroic soldier or American flag has served the Republicans well for 40 years--why should they stop now? Never mind that their policies are profoundly anti-soldier and generally un-American. Pre-conceived notions are pre-conceived notions, so Republicans must be pro-military and patriotic.

Imagine what they could have done at Nuremburg with a video wall!!! (Not to compare Republicans to Nazis--that would be over the top.)

That Pavlovian response is one of the reasons why I would like to see the anti-war protesters clothe themselves heavily in red, white, and blue. The optics of riot police herding and intimidating crowds that are draped in the American flag would be enough to cause a lot of confusion for those tuning in to get their daily dose of hippie whomping.

You noticed that too, huh? As the undisputed voice of cynicism, I know there were plenty of dud speeches during the DNC, but there was always an effort to draw back to issues and positions that meant something to Obama.

Last night we learned that McCain was beaten worse than a fur trapper in a PETA rally but he still believes there's no greater goal in America than to go to war and maintain that war. That is the unintended consequence of last's night's psychological waterboarding. What else can McCain offer us? Did anyone say? Did anyone bother to ask? No.

And tonight we get a master class in fear mongering from Captain Nine Eleven himself. I'll eat light so it comes back out with minimal distress.

Also, from baby-daddy Levi's MySpace page, courtesy of the tabloids:

On his MySpace page, Johnston boasts, "I'm a f - - -in' redneck" who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. "But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s- - - and just f - - -in' chillin' I guess."

"Ya f - - - with me I'll kick [your] ass," he added.

He also claims to be "in a relationship," but states, "I don't want kids."

I've read that Levi is on his way to MSP, and I'm fascinated by the idea that he'll think it's little more than a school trip, sneak out of his hotel, and get recognized in a bar or strip club or something suitably tawdry.

Maybe he'll just grab young Palin from behind, grope her belly and say, "That's my boyz!"

One of the more interesting intersections Palin makes between religion and politics in this vid is her call to all Alaskans to "Get right with God" so the money will flow with good business deals. Is that why the lower 48 & Hawai'i are in an economic recession? You know, we're not "right" with God? If so, then my wish is that Palin gets up on the stage tonight and touts that as her economic plan.
