Great article, but for the record, the Hyatt Regency Kansas City skywalk collapse (July 17, 1981) killed 114 people, not 13. On a lighter note, John Fogerty quoting Bob Walkenhorst lyrics verbatim is just priceless. Thanks for sharing this great story with us!

Hey Lubes,
Have you heard that I shovel it now - and don't take it any more. Just returned from China rescuing bears!? It was amazing. Live music was strained at best though. Circles get even smaller thanks to google. Hell the world has gotten smaller too!

Thank you for this story! I still remember the song the song "The Wages Of Sin" from when it appeared on a CMJ Music Sampler twenty years ago. Mr. Walkenhorst is a talented writer!

Bob Walkenhorst still plays semi-regularly around KC and put out an excellent solo album a few years back. Steve Phillips can be seen from KC to New York to Ireland as a member of The Elders. Talented fellers.

Those of us from the Heartland thank you. Steve, Bob, and Rich use to come to my small hometown of Rolla, Missouri to play street dances at the College. They were great. They should have been far bigger than they eventually got, but then again us Mid-Westerners distrust overly successful folk, and we have precedent... John Cougar Mellencamp. Thanks for signing them anyway, and next time post MP3's so those who don't know can wet their whistle a little.

I happen to be from a college town in MO...and I own that very album...and recall the early days of seeing Steve, Bob & Rich; then Steve, Bob, Rich & Pat; then the Rainmakers. One of the best alternative music clubs on the college circuit was (and is) the Blue Note in Columbia, MO. SB&R would pack the place two nights on the weekends they played there. Those nights dancing myself into a sweaty heap are some of my fondest memories!

Just recently Bob Walkenhorst was in town and I missed it -- I was heartbroken.
