Man, I hope Cohen comes somewhere within easy driving distance of Hampton Roads. I'd love to see him.

Did you ever see the 1974 film "Suzanne?" Years ago a friend of mine had a VHS copy of it and I gotta say that it was one of the oddest films I've seen. Leonard's song was (naturally) featured throughout the film, but it was difficult to watch because there was a whole lot of nothing going on.

This is an amazing piece. And Leonard Cohen is a god. Four hours of speechifying at the induction ceremony the other night, and the most riveting four minutes of the whole night was Cohen simply reciting the lyrics to "Tower of Song." They speak for themselves, and will likely continue to do so for centuries.

If you want a dose of Leonard without the ravaged voice, try Jenny sings Lenny: Jennifer Warnes' classic Famous Blue Raincoat album. Leonard duets with her on Joan Of Arc. Leonard also co-wrote a song with Warnes for the album, if I'm not mistaken: Song of Bernadette is one of the most heartbreakingly pretty things that Cohen has had a hand in.

I used to have I'm Your Man on vinyl. I gave it to a friend. It's probably one of his better efforts, but I'm no expert. Maybe I should get the LP back just to rip "Everybody Knows," which is one of my favorites.

Famous Blue Raincoat is how I heard Cohen's songs for the first time, back in '88. It's an excellent album, and she does manage to capture all the humor and gravity in his music...though, as beautiful as Warnes' singing is, one can't help but miss "the gift of [Cohen's] golden voice."

Very good write-up, Matt... But that picture of him makes me want to chant "Im-Ho-Tep!! Im-Ho-Tep!!"
