I was a big fan of Haircut 100 back in the day but had lost track of Nick Heyward over the years. One day in the mid-1990s I spotted Tangled in the import section at the Virgin Megastore and decided to buy it on an impulse. Let's just say I was more than pleasantly surprised. In my opinion, this is one of the best albums of the 1990s -- Britpop at its finest. Every song on the album is solid. I bought The Apple Bed and liked it too, but it didn't impress me as much as Tangled did. If you haven't heard this CD, give it a listen; you'll be impressed too.

Agreed. I very much enjoy "North of a Miracle" as well, and one of these days I'm going to get "Postcards from Home," too. (It was reissued on CD a few years back, but you know how it is: there's just too damned much music out there.)

I love reading anything about Nick -- and it's great that you got hold of him, even if briefly. I was surprised, though, that you could get through 1000 words and not mention the wondrous "Whistle Down the Wind." I guess it (and its host, the 1984 North of a Miracle album) predate your indoctrination, but "Whistle" is one of those songs I just can't resist -- if I come across it on the iPod playlist, it MUST be played. I'm watching the YouTube vid now. It's one of the most gorgeous bits of pop music ever recorded.

From Monday to Sunday was an obsession in '92.

Love Heyward, but the bleak, brutal truth is that From Monday sold less than 30k units in the U.S. - in those greedy days on the early '90s when anything "alternative" turned to gold, that just wasn't enough for Epic.

I was a big fan of Haircut 100, but never really bothered with Nick Heyward -- even though I used to see his LPs in the store when I went record shopping. But thanks to your great review (and the added spice of the Q&A with Nick) I think I'm going on a little Nick Heyward shopping spree!

Some Nick Heyward song always seems to make it to every mix cd I make. I never could get into "I Love You Avenue" but the other three are perfect examples of great pop music.

I think my favorite is "The Apple Bed". It seems to have the strongest guitars and lots of punch. '3 Colours', 'Dear Miss Finland' and 'Today' are killer tunes.

If Mr. Heyward releases another album, I'll be first in line to grab a copy.

And THANKS for the Beatles cover. I never heard that before, as I missed out on the EP.

I'd love to know if "The Mermaid and the Lighthouse Keeper" will ever be released. He recorded it with a female singer (something Dupre? She's a friend on his MySpace page). They could sell it on a website and take PayPal, and ship it from California. C'mon! Wil Wheaton does it with his books. He's a great model for that.

thanks for this. I still play my original LP version of "Pelican West" to this day. I've never listened much to Nick's solo work, but i will give it more of a listen.
