See, now this is why I'm always pushing the 'lost' CCM artists in my column. People are rightly shocked to find out how good some of this stuff, and specifically what kind of monster player Keaggy is.

It was 1982, and I was a junior in college. A friend of mine encouraged me to go see a show at the student union, this guitar player I'd never heard of before named Phil Keaggy. I wasn't expecting much, as only about 3 dozen people showed up despite the show being free. I was floored! Keaggy was incredible that night, pulling all kinds of references into his solos. Never mind that all the lyrics were overtly Christian (which I suspect kept a lot of people away), the playing was out of this world.

After the show, he was gracious enough to come into the audience and speak with us personally. They were selling albums at the souvenir table and I picked up "The Master and The Musician". Just incredible!

Thanks Will! Great interview and I'm looking forward to hearing all this stuff!

Never heard this guy before, and the tunes are right up my alley! Great interview -- now I'll have to go and track down some of these albums....

Another shining example of why I love this series so much. Great job, Will.

Thanks for this...I have always loved Phil's music. I would recommend a Christian band from the early 70's called Love Song. Phil Keaggy was actually a member for a short time, though he never recorded with them (at least nothing that was released). The band was led by Chuck Girard, who was a member a couple of 60's bands that had hits, including the Hondells. They were great band. Great music is great music...regardless of the religion it might be pushing.

I found a user made YouTube video for the title track to the bandss first album:

This site has short clips from almost all of the songs on their two albums:
