It's not even that I think they sucked. They just stick out like a the sore thumb of trends that didn't age well. And they're hilarious looking too :)

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

Step by Step is a classic.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I beg to differ with bagman (but also side with him in a way), and agree with JC....and I have the facts to back it up.

I worked at a "Modern A/C" radio station in 1996...for those not familiar with the industry jargon, that meant playlist of "currents" included Alanis, Oasis, the Wallflowers, Fiona Apple, and pretty much anything playing on the Lilithfair tour that year.

However, our "currents" were interwoven with "retro" 80s hits....we even had a Saturday night, all-80s show called the "Tainted 80s". Now granted, our 80s were commensurate with the "currents" we were playing at the time (i.e. alternative)...so our 80s playlist consisted of New Order, Eurythmics, R.E.M., Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, etc.

So yes, while the 80s schlock like Starship, Huey Lewis, Mr. Mister, et al remained "uncool"...there definitely was a craving for SOME 80s nostalgia.

Conversely, I now work at a "classic rock" station that is mostly 80s-based (i.e. Def Lep, GnR, Aerosmith, AC/DC, etc.)...and whenever we try to dip our toe into the 90s (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, STP, Collective Soul, etc.), a lot of our listeners tend to balk.

I realize a lot of this is generationally-based (i.e. what you grew up with), but I definitely don't hear any "90s nostalgia" going on around the radio dial. Whereas, I heard plenty of 80s "retro" programming happening from the mid-to-late-90s all the way up to present day.

I also realize that I'm responding to people who posted a year ago, and they probably won't even see this. But I'm sitting home sick on a Tuesday with little else to do but post on random blogs, and I thought it was worth stating.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

"Speaking of “too soon,” it’s worthwhile to note that while ’80s nostalgia was already rampant by the mid-’90s, no such yearning for the halcyon days of Showgirls and 90210 has yet emerged nearly a decade post-millennium" - JC

Boy did you get that wrong. By the mid 90s, anything remotely resembling the 80s was incredibly uncool. TV changed, music changed, politics changed and almost all for the better. I dont remember anyone wishing we could go back to the days of Bette Midler, Cheers or the Cold War.

And you claim theres no nostalgic love for the 90s? News flash: They just brought back 90210 and Melrose Place with a cast that includes the original characters. Hillary Clinton have 20+ million votes from a lot of people hoping to return to the glorious economic, happy-times of the 90s. Green Day, Pearl Jam and Radio Head are probably still the biggest bands out there. It seems the majority of the public would rather live on forever in the 90s if they could.

Im sure YOU had a lot of nostalgia for the 80s since thats the era in whih you went to college etc. But for everyone else, the 90s represents a golden era of happiness.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

It's a shame people have treated Michael Bolton so badly. It is a sorry state of affairs...but considering how plastic-fantastic she is these days, maybe music history will consider her as Barry Bonds to the Beatles' Hank Aaron...

I keep thinking to myself, "At least we can take some comfort in the fact that she's had nothing like the cultural impact that Elvis or the Beatles had"--but then I think of what I called in this column the "caterwauling that permeates American Idol" and I think, yeah, she's at least had a big impact on what the young folks these days think of as good singing. At least I've never seen a Mariah lunch box...

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

Even though it wasn't a #1 song I'd like to add "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something to the list of hated 90s songs, since I still find the idea that two people should stick together because they "both kinda liked" a film incredibily stupid.

And I whole heartedly endorse your choices in the top 5. (I think the worst Bolton song is "Can I Touch You There"-ewww!) I really can't stand how Mariah has broken chart records by the Beatles and soon to top Elvis...

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

Yup. But Good Vibrations was a kick ass song with some of the most killer backup supplied by Miss Loleatta Holloway.

And while my love of Mariah Carey knows few (legal) bounds, I agree that Hero was almost too much to bear.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I completely believe that "I'll Be Missing You" is the absolute worst song of the 90's. And completely agree with your comment about Sean Combs being a terrible rapper. I pretty much agree with most songs on this list (although Mariah Carey is my guilty pleasure...and I don't really feel that guilty about it!)

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I completely understand the inclusion of "I'm Too Sexy" in this, but I will absolutely stand by the fact that if you removed that song from their album - Up - it's totally awesome. Not one thing on it comes close to sounding like "I'm too Sexy". And I completely understand that if I had any credibility, I just lost pretty much it all.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I'm so glad you said it first - I also kind of dug "All 4 Love"

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

You're missing the point, that is the goodness of Bryan Adams' heart. To truly enjoy his music, you'd probably need to be 60 or so years old now. And is there no better song to take a pee-break for than "Everything I Do (I Inflict It On You)"? And if your pee-breaks are needing to be increasingly longer, isn't nice this kind-hearted Canuck has your bladder in mind?

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

It means he likes getting it up the eyehole.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I just finished a list of Top 5 off-key songs (http://www.myhmphs.com/2008... and almost included Stevie B, but I chose Club Nouveau's "Lean On Me" instead. Poor Stevie B - Bad hair, bad voice. He looked like he should be stripping, and sounded like Fogelberg. Anyway, "Jessie" went to #26 on the Hot 100, and #11 on the AC chart. His followup to that, the just as bad "Beautiful in My Eyes" (what does that mean? You're ugly in other people's eyes?) actually peaked a couple of notches higher. Then, he luckily disappeared.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

Regarding #4 and #2: YES YES! A thousand times yes. God AWFUL. All of it.

My most hated song of the entire decade, however, was Joshua Kadison's "Jessie." I spent many an office afternoon in an ugly funk, having been unable to avoid hearing that song for the 567th+ time on the Work Mix FM radio station that an annoying girl used to run every day in accounting. Oh how I hate that song. I'd be floored if it got anywhere near #1 (on any chart), but I'm sayin' my peace nonetheless.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

"I Want to Sex You Up" peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.
Their follow up 2 singles, "I Adore Mi Amor" and "All 4 Love" did hit #1, and while the former I can take or leave, I actually liked the later, a decent slick of new-jack mixed with retro soul tones.

Re: Jesus of Cool: The Worst Number One Songs of the ’90s

I Want to Sex You Up, but Color Me Badd.

Why two d's?
