some good stuff here, but I would have included Eddy Grant's "Electrice Avenue" which spent a whopping 5 weeks at the runner-up spot. Lost out to that annoying, off-tempo stalker song "Every Breath You Take" Darn you Sting!

Mickey and Gloria were produced by the same producer. Also, the arranger of the Italian version of Gloria was the producer of the US Version. I think that there are less than 20 people that have a #1 and #2 in the same week.

Wasn't "Start Me Up" used in the Windows 95 ad campaign? I just remember seeing those ads everywhere. Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles is one of my favorite cover songs.

The Bangles can't whine about "Hazy Shade of Winter" (or "Manic Monday") if "Walk Like an Egyptian" held two other songs from #1.

I would have to think, as an artist, that getting blocked from the finish line is a lot easier to take when the blocker has merit. So Springsteen got the shaft, but it was because of "When Doves Cry." But what Mick and Keef getting screwed between the moon and New York City? Now that's gotta hoit!

Funny that you mentioned Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" remix. I had forgotten all about ituntil I heard it on a New York station a couple of weeks ago. And now you have it here. Seems that every rocker did an "dance remix" version of their song during the mid 80's.

Billboard had "Don't Be Cruel/Hound Dog" on top for 11 weeks in '56. Your point is well taken, but since I had already discussed Foreigner's shafting during last year's Worst of the '80s column, I gave myself a little leeway this year. Besides, NO song gets a #1 slot on this list...that would defeat the purpose. If you like, you can consider this one more indignity that "Waiting for a Girl Like You" will just have to live with.

First off, brilliant post. As a self-identified chart geek, I love this type of stuff. Having said that, I will put out there that Foreigner should have the #1 slot based on its sole achievement. "Physical" was the longest-running #1 of the rock era at that time, wasn't it? And like you said, "Express" was held back by Martika. Not really something to brag about.
