At first, I thought Bright Eyes was vastly overrated. Then songs like "You Will. You? Will." and "First Day of my Life" started to grow on me. But now I'm back to where I was at the beginning, still wondering what all the hubbub is about.

To me, Oberst is a token indie-guy. He's good at what he does, but because he struck a few critics in the soft spot on earlier Bright Eyes discs, he's elevated to this surreal place of prominence. I've no idea why.
The new album just doesn't connect, and he sounds much more "nervous poodle" than usual.

I'm wide awake it's morning is a lovely record but he hasn't equalled it before or since. The guy is quite a capable song writer but they do tend to blur into eachother.
