The Fourteenth Day of Mellowmas: 867-5309 To the World
Among my music friends it is often pointed out that the part of "Indie" that I prefer is that which was descended from Springsteen: The Hold Steady, The Gaslight Anthem. The other side of Indie seems to be more twee oriented. Decemberists, et al. While much of the current scene plays in both hemispheres and there is no real focus for description anymore I am glad that music like this is getting play.
I agree with the caller on Sound Opinions that The Hold Steady would have been opening for Foreigner if they had come out 30 years ago (I agree mainly because that caller was me but also because he/I was right)
The fact that a record like The Gaslight Anthem is forced to languish in the Indie category points to a big problem that rock has nowadays. How can it connect if it can't even define itself? And, regardless of what anyone thinks, we do need to be able to define the music we love so we can describe it to others.
Indie has become a worse cliche than Alternative ever was. And more of a catch all.
Wait. What were we talking about again?
Get this record. It's damned good.
