I agree. I picked it up two days ago and it's fun, and it's slightly offputting for the reasons you expressed. HOWEVER, the rest of the net's near-messianic hype thus far has been very off-putting.
Right now, "Walcott" is getting lots of play.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, I have been following VW through the myriad blogs I read. Actually, I don't read most of them, I just insert them into Peel and I can see what tracks are being played. I didn't realize that I had already downloaded 8 tracks over the past year from various blog sources. I guess I have to go buy it...which is always weird when you already have the whole thing. VW at first reminded me of Violent Femmes inasmuch as they don't sound anything like what their name suggests. What's nice is to see this burgeoning world sound coming out of New York. Take a look at Brooklyn's Yeasayer as well.

I love Yeasayer, that album was on my Top 10 of '07 list. Iron & Wine is also adding a lot of world influence into his music lately.

The only place I touch the internet hype-o-sphere is...here. So not surprisingly, this is the first I have heard of these people.
I like M79 I guess. I don't care for the other track at all.
This is really the new thing huh? Modest Mouse + UB40 divided by Columbia?
