Popdose: Lost in the ’70s: Carpenters, “Ticket To Ride” | Popdose

Aww, their cover of that song makes me all mushy inside too. Karen Carpenter has one of the best female voices ever, shining particularly on their sadder songs like 'Superstar' and 'Yesterday Once More.' I suddenly have the urge to pull out their 'Best of...' ...

I am feeling the same desire to pull out the Best of collection (or more accurately, queue it up in iTunes.) I had this album in college (and I'm 36 so yes I was kinda lame) and played it quite a bit. While "Ticket To Ride" was never one of my faves, it sounded pretty good today!

I'll defend "Top of the World" or "Only Yesterday" or "shoo-be-doo-lang-lang" until I've dropped 75 pounds (sorry), but I've never been able to contain my distaste for this cover. The dips into minor key are jarring, the way she pronounces "don't" like Julie Andrews as Maria von Trapp is beyond irritating, and the whole thing is formless as the dregs from a cafeteria Jello tray.

And now I, too, will go pull up their GH album on iTunes--but I'll skip this one and head straight for "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft."
