To today's listeners (and probably even to lots of people who know who the guy is), Ravi Shankar's music is only known by the influence it had on that Harrison kid from the Beatles. His daughter, Norah Jones, has had lot of commercial success.

Too bad you don't appreciate Rufus Wainwright (have you heard his recreation of the famous Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall concert?), but the McGarrigles and Loudon III have had a smaller following, I think, and certainly in recent years.

Cissy Houston was a hell of a gospel singer (can you say that about gospel singers?) before Whitney came on the scene. Tim Buckley got an influx of new listeners when people fell in love with Jeff's voice (even before his far-too-early death). Rapper Nas's dad is jazz trumpeter Olu Dara, who has quite a following in that realm but not much outside it.

There must be more. Just a thought.

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

I have not heard Lucy's stuff, but I'll check it out.

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

Have you heard Lucy Walsh? I kind of like her voice. I think, if she somehow managed to obtain some decent songs, she might have a shot.

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

I do like this song, but when I hear Joe's voice, I keep thinking of Neil Young's lyrics to "Old Man."

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

Hey, Joe's voice is what he's got and uses. He ain't putting on a thing. Give him a break! You seem to like it. AND...Joe and his trio go anywhere, do anything related to working their butts off--back-up, openers, whatever--for the chance to play and try to win fans. The guitarist seems to me completely underrated, and the drummer is one hell of a drummer!

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

Yeah, I had to. It was required after going to Carnie Wilson's My Space page -- where I found out she's performing with Christopher Cross! http://profile.myspace.com/...

I tried with Rufus...I REALLY tried, but I couldn't warm up to his songs.

Re: Mix Six: “Scions”

Really. You had to use Wilson Phillips? Really? I could have lent you some Rufus Wainwright, or even Liam Finn.
