Popdose: Mix Six: “Super Soundtracks!”

  • Malchus · 5 months ago
Great idea this week! I love hearing soundtrack music like this and believe that in 100 years some of these themes by Williams and Goldsmith will be played like the classical music we hear today by Mozart and Beethoven. One of my all time favorite selections of music is the "Planet Krypton" theme in "Superman." Anyone reading this who is unfamiliar with that piece of brilliant writing should check it out, too.

Thanks for the great Mix Six, Jeff.

I was kind of surprised that there was,to somewhat quote a line from Risky Business, a preponderance of John Williams in this mix since, well, Jeff is a huge Jerry Goldsmith fan.

Ted, "a preponderance of John Williams" - very nice. I was just as surprised as you since Jerry is really my favorite. A couple of Jerry's cues "Escape From Suburbia" (Potergeist) and "The Enterprise" (Star Trek The Motion Picture) almost made the list. However I had to be honest with myself when I recalled just how many times I played the albums to Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back.

Malchus, I agree "Planet Krypton" is also an incredible cue. Truth be told, I probably could have picked 6 tracks from the Superman score alone! :)

Jeff, where is Margot Kidder's dramatic reading of "Can You Read My Mind" backed by a lite disco beat? WHERE IS IT?!

Nice post, Jeff. I used to love buying orchestral soundtracks myself, and I still have my cassettes of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Patriot Games," and "Basic Instinct," another movie with a great Goldsmith theme.

LOL. I sheepishly admit I played that "Can You Read My Mind" track a lot. :)

    It's great! Goofy but fun.

My family had a rather large organ purchased around 1980. It came with a demo LP of stuff you could play on it. Among the tracks were Can You Read My Mind. I should try to find that...

Holy crap. You can find ANYTHING on the internet.

Look in the lower right-hand corner of the page for links to the tracks.

"Cantina Band" from Star Wars was another track.

James Horner is next, I hope. One has to appreciate the themes in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, and the choral movements in Glory. Two of James Horner's finest scores to date.
  • JeffJohnson · 5 months ago
I love James Horner too. The scores to Krull, Glory and Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan in particular came to mind when I was preparing this list. But the Horner cue that was closest to making the "six" was "Stealing The Enterprise" from Star Trek III: The Search For Spock. I love that cue!!

Can't believe I forgot to mention the "Bishop's Countdown" track from Aliens. I think that cue has a period of at least 3 years where it was used in the trailer of almost every action/sci-fi movie out there. Horner must have made a fortune on that one.

Agreed on Krull, even though it is very similar to ST II.

Now I need to dig up my copy of the Star Trek III soundtrack...

Oh yeah, "Bishop's Countdown" is fantastic (similar to "Kirk's Explosive Reply" from Wrath Of Khan). Hell, if I was cutting together an action trailer, I'd probably use it too! I also love "Futile Escape" from the Aliens score.

Asteroid Field has always been a favorite of mine from the Star Wars trilogy. The other favorite is The Death of Darth Vader (especially when the violin is plucked as though it's the last time the "march" will ever be played again).
  • JeffJohnson · 5 months ago
I also like the Death Of Darth Vader cue. Hard to believe it was missing from the original Return Of The Jedi album!

    Intrada. Wonderful.

Thanks for the memories. The dumbing down of the music in films like these is one of things I most dislike about contemporary moviemaking. Williams keeps the faith; so much of the rest is just noise.

My favorite living film composer remains John Barry, who seems to have left the soundstage in 2001.
