Popdose: Mix Six: “The Trumpet! The Trumpet!”

  • Jack Feerick · 1 year ago
Pedantic sidenote: It's "Face THE Face," isn't it? I always assumed it was about the narrator reconciling himself to his past as a Mod, i.e. a "Face." Great tune, anyway.

Also: AAGH! I had a trumpet-themed Mix Six of my own all ready to go! (My daughter plays the horn, see.) Too slow off the draw again. Back to the drawing board, I guess...

You're right! Mistake on my part. For the record: It's "Face the Face," kids.

Another great trumpet solo in rock: Love's "Alone Again Or."

My personal favorite: The Lucy Show, "New Message." At least, I *think* that's a trumpet. Maybe it's just a keyboard. But it sounds like a trumpet, that's for damned sure. I also love The Connells' "Over There," but I offer the same caveat.

My favorite trumpet song of the moment is from They Might Be Giants' new children's album, the song about the seven days of the week. "Oh yes, yes, practice trumpet every day..."

Minor quibble, but I always thought of Face The Face as a trombone song. Trumpets and brass, yes, but it is a trombone soloing around and under that annoying blues harp. I just dug out the original CD so I could listen to it in higher fidelity. Boy, I never thought of White City as particularly well-recorded, but the dynamic range of this cut seems very wide compared to today's sonically smushed-up compressed affairs. As Bruce Cockburn says, the trouble with normal is it always gets worse.

But speaking of Cockburn, if you want to travel back to the dim distant past of the mid 1970s, Cockburn's song Silver Wheels has a uniquely frenetic and appropriate trumpet solo.

That's a flugelhorn on "Silver Wheels," I think; but there's some gorgeous muted trumpet on "World of Wonders," ten years later.

You are correct, sir. *hat tip*

Two more songs featuring really nice trumpet solos were featured on my blog recently. The bonus were that the solos were turned in by jazz greats: Freddie Hubbard on Billy Joel's often-forgotten track "Zanzibar" and Roy Hargrove on John Mayer's "Clarity"

I'd add two more to the mix: Herb Alpert on Peter Allen's "The More I See You" and Danielson's more recent song "Did I Step On Your Trumpet." If you haven't heard it, it's a real hoot.

Sorry to keep highjacking this thread with self-promotion, but actually I've been fascinated with the use of brass instruments in rock for a while.

Another great one is "Talking to the Wall" by Joan Armatrading with Steve Sidwell and Steve Sprong billed as playing flugelhorn and trumpet. (again, don't know whch one does which). Joe Jackson is also on piano. A download and more about this song is at
