Popdose: Mope Like Me: Everything but the Girl, “Two Star”

I miss EBTG. Like the deserts miss the rain.

Seriously, though, even on their last few records, which were more club-oriented (a genre I'm not completely in love with), they provided a soulful element to a decidedly electronic environment. That's not easy to do, but it didn't seem too jarring a progression from the stuff on Amplified Heart, where the electronics were used in a subtle fashion.

If I hear Tracey sing "Time After Time," though, I think I might cry ...

We have very similar tastes in mopey music, David. I have every EBTG CD, and even though I got into them when I was in a very stable and committed relationship (still am, and with the same woman), there was just something about their songs of loving and loss that really resonated with me.

You want to take the column over? I think I'm starting to run out of mope, to be honest. I'm thinking of opening this column up so that I can include, well, anything. Who wants to be depressed all the time? I used to be that way, but not anymore.

I'm far too cheerful for this column. :-)

I don't understand why they haven't produced another EBTG album. But Tracey's solo CD will tide me over in the meantime.

Tracey is a better singer now than ever before, to these ears, at least. That's why I'd really love some new EBTG material. Especially something that pushes the boundaries of their usual fare a little bit. Her version of Jobim's Corcovado on Red, Hot & Rio is stellar, though it kind of co-opts Jobim to their own later EBTG style, instead of going genuine bossa nova.

I must say I have been a fan for a while and recently revisted the song TWO STAR at a period in my life where it works for me. It's amazing how what I didn't understand at 24 is so clear now. There are really some poignant lyrics in this song that causes me to reflect on my relationship that has been in diarray for 5 years.
