This is all about the original fans recapturing their youth (no offense to your New Kids fandom, I still pull out She's So Unusual from time to time and sing into my hairbrush) but if they did a really serious album with the top hit producers nobody would go see them. We have current boy bands who are still boys, and nobody in the New Kids made the transition to adult pop star like Bobby Brown did then and Justin Timberlake has now, so for them to try and make a comeback with serious music would really not work.
