Popdose: Pop Goes the World: Icecream Hands, “Sweeter Than the Radio”

I have been putting Dodgy on mixes for years. Great tune. Thanks for the reminder and forcing me to seek out the rest.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to spot the similarity between "Yellow And Blue" and a rather well-known Squeeze track. I posted about it a couple of weeks ago on my blog.

Thanks for bringing Icecream Hands to the attention of readers outside of Australia. They've quietly beavered away at their craft for years, and with little fanfare (power pop suffers from a lack of promotion pretty much everywhere, I guess), but at least they have a loyal following here in the land of Australians.

    Thanks again, David.

Ha! That's hilarious that you and I posted identical snippets of the same two songs. I've never done that before, but something about those two songs demanded that I do it here. How funny.

And good for you for being Australia's only Sugarbomb fan. They will definitely make an appearance in this column in the near future.

Excellent. Sugarbomb are (still) my favourite band of the 21st century.

I used to follow this band around in Australia back in the day. They had so many singles off this album. Dodgy, Yellow And Blue, Obvious Boy, Spirit - so funny. Singer Chuck Jenkins said in a n interview it was like Thriller or something.

Jenkins has a nice solo career going in Australia. He also used to work at Gaslight Records, one of the the best music shops in Aus (now sadly gone).

    Great find and great column.

The following album, 'Broken UFO', is similarly tasty.

The day XTC's 'Apple Venus Vol. 1' came I, I bought a copy from Jenkins when he worked at Gaslight. He, naturally, raved about XTC.
