I live in a community where crime is on the rise and ponder what I would do if my home was broken into in the middle of the night. Well, I'm with you on the fire extinguisher concept.
Actually, I used to carry one in my car back in the early 80's after I witnessed a car fire. I got thinking about how useful it might be if a would-be car-jacker or a gang of thugs attempted to harm me. I could blast away at them causing blindness and choking and if I was so inclined I could follow up by clobbering them with the bottle for good measure.

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

Ah, Scalia. I've read a couple of articles that point out a few things:

1. Despite precedent that establishes the contrary, it's tough to argue the 2nd Amendment isn't an individual right.

2. The Supreme Court ruling applies to federal law, and not state law or city ordinances. You'll notice the NRA filing lawsuits that have to do with federal housing complexes and the right to possess a handgun for self defense.

3. My own reading of Scalia's opinion is that it is framed through an historical reading that includes a slim grouping of sources -- and a wholesale dismissal of those sources with which he disagrees. In short, Scalia, et al believe that they have the correct reading of history, and are not at all bothered by the interpretative leaps that "fit" with their judicial activism. Original intent? Hardly. The opinion is straight out of the interpretive theories Justices like Scalia deride.

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

True. But as far as I know, the only famous rock guy to get "Kabonged" by his own guitar was Krist Novoselic.

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

Ha ha! I know the Supreme Court is supposed to be above the partisan fray, but there was just no way, no how, that was going to happen this year.

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

Which rights, though? However, I am open-minded. Do you have any credible real-life examples to present? Certainly, if an extinguisher is close at hand and a gun is not, it does pose interesting possibilities.

I'm in the arguably enviable position of having both devices, but in a crisis, I'm not sure I would know how to properly use either one. I need gun training or fire extinguisher training. Or both. This not being a high crime area, I haven't felt any urgency about it. Guess I will take my chances.

I guess what worries me most is that we hung onto our individual rights by the vote of a single justice. That fact will be significant in the fall elections. Significant to me, at least.

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

I'm picturing Homer Simpson pointing a .357 at a blazing fire, firing bullet after bullet into it, and lamenting "oh, why won't this fire going out?"

Re: Pop Politico: “The Quintessential Self-Defense Weapon”

El Kabong destroyed more guitars than Pete Townsend.
