My dad works for a nonprofit. They used to have plenty of extra money, which they would blow through with large travel budgets and such.

Well, according to this site, the money does go back into the USPS:

And yeah, because they are a non-profit organization, they are required to only "break even" so unless Congress changes the law, they can't make a profit.

Just a heads up: not all stamp increases are put in place by the postal service and they take time to implement. For example, the 2006 rate hike came from a 2003 law that created a $3.1 billion fund for who-knows-what. Talk to Congress on that one.

It's tough being a business with competitors that is also a government agency not allowed to turn a profit. Where do you think all the money goes? Do you really think it goes back into the postal service?

The "forever" stamp is a good parallel for the Brentwood problem - a short-term gain (for the Post Office - more people snapping up stamps) that will come due with a much higher cost later.

Ooh, thanks for the reminder about the postage increase. I think they actually did plan that, to an extent, with the "forever" stamps.
