Swamp Ophelia is my personal IG favorite, but I love the majority of their catalog. I remember seeing the video for "Closer" on a Christian video show early on, and thought to myself "they know these Girls are gay, right?" Apparently they didn't. You're dead on about the live shows, too. I've seen them in big auditoriums, small theaters, and even outdoors, and they could play in a deli and still have some serious heft behind them. Here's to another 20 years of quality.

Epic never made a fuss about how they expressed themselves in the songs, but they kept a tight clamp on the image of them, never really incorporating that side of them into the press releases and such. There were some gay and lesbian newcomers before them that were very vocal (I think one was called Phranc?) and wound up tanking for their candor. Although it sounds atrocious to say, I think Epic did right by them, because it that timeframe, the label was actually protecting them.

When Melissa Etheridge came out, the point was moot.

I can still remember the first time I heard Closer to Fine - I was blown away. I lost track of them after Swamp Ophelia, which I really liked, and hadn't paid attention to an album in years. I have to give endorsement to their latest album Poseidon and the Bitter Bug which is surprisingly good. If you're like me, tuned out on IG for a few years, you might want to give that one a listen.

    Great read here...thanks!

I still recall the first time I heard the Indigo Girls, a friend and I were driving through upstate NY, listening to WDST, and they played "Kid Fears." I had already been a huge R.E.M. fan, and hearing Stipe's voice on this track was incredible. It was just a fantastic song. I tracked down the CD a few days later, and fell in love with it.
