Popdose: Sugar Water: Stay Strong

This is just brilliant. I looked over what those other writers did and none of them come close to the thought and insight that went into this "report." One of the best things I've read on Popdose.

    Nice job, Robert. Bravo!

    Thanks for reading it, Scott.

Well done, Robert. I'm sure Kent will be brilliant in his new job.

National Lampoon's site used to have a great feature called "Superman is a Dick," where they displayed comic covers like the one above, with Supes behaving badly toward others, or saying something rude. It was hysterical -- I wish it were still around.

Thanks for reading it, Rob, and thanks for mentioning "Superman Is a Dick," because that solves a mystery for me. Four years ago I found a bunch of great Superman comic book covers where he's being a jerk or there's evidence of him having been a jerk, e.g. an illegitimate son he didn't know about, but I couldn't remember where I'd downloaded them from once I started using them as Facebook profile pictures last summer. Now I know:

    A good column, no question.

As for Supes' tendencies, I also enjoyed going to that site to check out the covers. I'm amazed at how many of the artists, in an attempt to characterize Superman as contrite and despairing, drew him as a common butterfingers accidentally causing somebody's death.

"Superman! How could you kill my husband?!"

    "Uh... oops?"

I like the cover where he's Jimmy Olsen's slumlord. The thought of Superman, with his heat vision, denying his tenants adequate heat in the winter because he's too busy saving the world or taking time off at the Fortress of Solitude ("You wanna talk about cold, Metropolis in January is nothing compared to that place") is great.

"And rats, don't talk to me about rats if you've ever had polar bears hibernating in your walls..."

    Robert, this column is awesome.

Thanks. I was laid off from my newspaper job, but that was two weeks after I wrote the first draft of this story. So I'm not saying I'm Superman. But Christopher Reeve and I do share a September 25th birthday, which made me pretty happy as a child.
