The marriage was over before 1979 and she began living alone. She never looked back. They never lived together again.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

I've been watching a lot of YouTube recordings of Nanci, and I prefer the live versions of her songs to the recorded ones. The recorded ones seem to be overproduced and stylized. The concert versions are cleaner, with just Nanci singing and a few instruments behind her. This is one case where YouTube is a better way to listen to her than a CD. Plus, you get to see Nanci Griffith's gorgeous face and smile.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Was going to parrot the same observation regarding the sharp-edged, overly erudite construction of an artist's life. Vicissitudes, dude; you got 'em, we all got 'em.

To wit, not all blossoms can remain sweet, they do what all living things do, they change and most often, wilt...

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Nanci and I are both native Texans, both living out of home, and on entirely different sides of the political spectrum (I'm very conservative, and an Aggie). However, the lady has the ability to take me home with her songs, her thoughts and her discussions. I value her as I value the silver peso my grandfather placed on the heart of his first redheaded grandson. I'll fight her tooth and nail over our politics, and I'll fight you to the death if you try to prevent her magic from filling out lives.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Some good insights. But can do without the snarkiness masquerading as too cool for my own gig. Homespun dive routine? Really, man. if you want to feel superior go steal some candy from a kid. You sound silly around the grownups.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Nancy Griffith has the unique gift of of connecting with the listener from the drop of the needle. Whether it's her comforting vocals, killer harmonies, thoughtful songwriting, mix of instrumentation,or all of the above, she takes our hands as we embark on her journey, making us feel safe, welcome and right at home. Perhaps, this is why she is still so highly respected and valued today.

Phyllis Sinclair
Singer-Songwriter

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

I've been trying to get a recording of Nanci's live performace of "Once in a Very Blue Moon" from the 1985 Austin City Limits performace. It was beautiful. It was shown for several years on CMT. I don't think this live recording was ever released on record, cassette, or cd. The record that was released of "Once in a Very Blue Moon" was not the same version. The live performace in 1985 was far superior. Also, I was wondering how Nanci's health is now? I saw her perform at the Detroit "Hoedown" back in 1986. She sang "Once in a Very Blue Moon", and "Daddy Said".

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Thank you for the time and effort you but into the above. Nanci is my favourite singer in the world and I so enjoy listening to her. One of her Irish Fans! Like many, I became an instant (and huge) fan upon hearing "Once In A Very Blue Moon", then seeing her as many times as I could, and each time being captivated by this wonderful artist. In retrospect, the MCA records have some strong material, but at the time, they felt like a betrayal, with only "Storms", and the beautiful 'It's A Hard Life' standing above the rest. There have been several questionable career moves (thankfully the dance remix album 'Nanci Griffith Revisited' - I kid you not - never saw the light of day beyond advance release), and to say that to follow her requires patience is an understatement, but I still approach each release with the hopes that she will return to the original magic..

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

I'm a huge Nanci fan, have been for years, and it's hard to imagine a more spot-on overview of her career. It's all been downhill for the past decade or so, but when she was good--and occasionally still, in concert--she's just incredible. Thanks for a great piece of work--and congrats on the return of the much-missed Jefito.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Wow, thank you for this! I saw her live once and have just a few of her albums -- Other Voices, Other Rooms was my first. I didn't realize until now what a long recording history (and interesting life) she had.

Re: The Popdose Guide to Nanci Griffith

Thank you so much for this.
