The Bottom Line was the best music venue that I ever attended, and I spent many memorable nights there. Years after its closing, I still miss the presence of this wonderful club. Great sound, great sightlines, and great music.

Interesting story! And thanks for being refreshingly honest about your initial good-but-not-great impression of Springsteen -- it'd be so easy to claim you were amongst his first boosters, that you instantly grasped his genius, etc.

I haven't heard David S.'s solo work...maybe I should try tracking it down!

"So without thinking of the consequences, I more or less single-handedly broke up the original E Street Band by pirating two of its charter members and signing them to Epic"

Boom Carter wasn't a charter member of the E Street Band. He only drummed for them for a matter of months, and the song "Born To Run" is the only official release he appears on.

The 1st E Street drummer, who played on all of Springsteen's 1st two albums, was Vinnie "Mad Dog" Lopez.

Thanks for sharing this story, Tom. Very cool to know the road that led to David's solo LPs. "Transformation" is pretty great. I got into that one when I was discovering Weather Report and Alphonso Johnson's solo records. Gonna have to dig that one up again!

I am really digging these Tom Werman stories. Though The Nuge has sort of become a cartoon, back around 1975-1980 he was the real deal. Still love "Catch Scratch Fever".
