Pretty good review, I agree with most of your assessment. I was so scared for such a long time that they would ruin the book, but they actually managed to do it justice. I think the one major change is handled well, and actually makes more sense in the context of the film that a giant squid would. I think had they gone that route, it may have come off as some goofy Cloverfield shit.

But yeah, the film manages to capture the feel of the book, and visually is one of the most stunning things ever released - if you aren't sitting jaw agape at the scenes on Mars with Dr. Manhattan and his crystal castle, there's something seriously wrong with you.

I was, in typical comic book geek mode, fully prepared to have so much to nitpick and so much to complain about, but was left pleasantly surprised.

Agreed. The altered ending wasn't unpleasant, and the rest of it was a great interpretation from page to film. A little more titty than I remembered, but maybe I had the expurgated version of the novel.

I'll go one step further and say that I think the reworked ending is BETTER than the original.
I liked this movie far more than I did The Dark Knight. It was meta, dark, nihilistic, hopeful, smart and well told.
    I'll be seeing it again.

Loved this review, I'm glad that you have faith in Snyder as a director, I do too. Too many people are trashing him. I thought he did a fantastic job.

Watchmen is a visual and psychological cornucopia -- definitely worth watching

150 minutes of spectacular fantasy. Eminently watchable even for those who know nothing about the background.
