While it doesn't fit "perfectly" into the topic at hand (fake bands), I can't help but mention Liam Lynch's CD from several years ago entitled "Fake Songs". Tunes here include "Fake Bjork Song", "Fake David Bowie Song", "Fake Depeche Mode Song", "Fake Pixies Song" and "Fake Talking Heads Song". Gotta give the guy credit for this concept, and the CD also boasts the ultra-cool tune "United States of Whatever".

I can't believe you didn't mention the lawsuit that the rights holders of the Beatles songs created against the Rutles. Following the lawsuit, all of the Rutles songs now list Lennon/McCartney as co-writers.

Another obvious favorite (for me at least) would be The Wonders from "That Thing You Do!" A less obvious favorite would be 50s era The Hartaches from the CBS miniseries "Shake, Rattle and Roll". Good tunes throughout those two movies.

I really liked this article, but I hope that you are planning on including "National Lampoon Lemmings"- probably the very best of parody music ever. Not only was it something that included talent from Second City and SNL before they hit it big, it also featured Christopher Guest pre-"Spinal Tap". Absolutely brilliand send-up of "Woodstock"...

I disagree on the Stillwater stuff, I really like some of those songs. Have you seen/heard of the book Rocklopedia Fakebandica? It's a compendium of 'fake bands' over the past four decades.
