You might want to check out Cecil Brown's book about the song, "Stagolee Shot Billy." It's a good read.

Tommy Roe's last Top 40 entry was a cover of "Stagger Lee", which peaked at #25 in the early fall of '71. I can send you an mp3 of you like.

    Kelly,

I love this post & the idea in general even more. If I may, I'd like to suggest The Rolling Stone's Wild Horses as the next column. I have several cool versions & I know there are many more floating around on the web.

Forgot Southside Johnny's version but I'll still probably live. Thanks.

I'm with you - this song rocks (and jazzes, and folks, and gothics, and baroques, and bluegrasses...) The person I'd most like to hear attempt this song: Jonny Lang.

    Two you don't have:

    Furry Lewis (1927) - Billy Lyons & Stack-O-Lee - http://www.box.net/shared/y70rkpk52l

    Tim and Mollie O'Brien (1991) - Stagger Lee - http://www.box.net/shared/k99zq58mpf
