Popdose: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

  • rwcass · 1 year ago
    Maybe she's just misunderstood, Matthew.

The original Chic mix of "I'm Coming Out" does sound a little funkier, but I'm so used to the version I've always heard on the radio that the original mix doesn't make much impact for me. I think the second mix's trumpet solo is better too. But one thing we can agree on is that Diana Ross really is an asshole.

I really like this new column's concept, by the way. Any Ike Turner albums on the horizon?
  • MatthewBolin · 1 year ago
Oh, Ike's a coming. Damn straight.

Although he's not technically an artist, I'm wondering what you would do to the (apparently) universally reviled producer Tom Werman...
  • Eric S. · 1 year ago
You could do Cheap Trick's original "In Color" as produced by Werman and compare it to the unreleased re-recording they did
  • MatthewBolin · 1 year ago
I think if I was to do Werman, I might just do "Girls, Girls, Girls" by Motley Crue, and encapsulate both artist and producer in one post.

Honestly, from what I read on Werman, I've got a bit of grudging respect for the man. He might be an egotistical prick in all likelihood, but there's something cool about a dude who retires from producing metal and hard-rock albums so he can open up a bed & breakfast.

Cheap Trick haven't had much luck with their producers, have they?
  • DwDunphy · 1 year ago
This was the person Michael Jackson wanted to be?!?

No wonder he's a boyfiddlin' nuckfutz.
  • David_E · 1 year ago
Ooooo, love this feature! 32 tracks and an asshole.

Ha...just one minor correction (and I could be wrong here)...didn't Diana's autobiography come out in 1993, and not 1983 as is suggested in this article?

I gotta agree that she seems like a Grade AA beeyotch, but I also think that her 1979 album "The Boss" is pretty solid (although not nearly as good as "diana"), meaning that this particular bad person has actually put out TWO good albums.
  • MatthewBolin · 1 year ago
Damn, I think you're right about 1993. That would mean she hid the information about her daughter's real father until the girl was 22! That's even worse. I wonder when she actually informed her daughter that her first husband (she married him in 1971, months within the date she gave birth) wasn't her dad?

I also neglected to mention that she finally made a public disclosure of her daughter's real father on an episode of Oprah while promoting the book (and with the daughter in the audience--they panned to her as Diana announced she was Berry Gordy's child).
  • MatthewBolin · 1 year ago
And it's corrected. Thanks Jeff, and thanks again Mike.
  • deltablues2 · 1 year ago
Diana appeared on a MUCH hyped episode of Oprah to perform and talk about the autobiography. When she introduced her daughters (who are FINE) she casually mentioned that the oldest was Barry's daughter. Why not include that in the book as a big revalation / worst kept secret ?
  • Mike · 1 year ago
Oop...three good albums. I forgot about the Lady Sings The Blues soundtrack. But does that count?
  • michael · 1 year ago
I love when rock lovers try to write about music styles that are completely out of their frame-of-reference; even though, anyone of a certain age believes he has a unique perspective on all the music that was recorded during his glory days. If you have such an ax-to-grind about Diana, why do you own any of her albums.
  • JohnHughes · 1 year ago
What specifically was incorrect or wrong about anything in this article?

Are we to believe Mizz Ross isn't a bitch on wheels?
  • rwcass · 1 year ago
Psst! John! "Michael" is really "Dirty Diana." She's so paranoid about what people are saying about her that she even monitors the blogosphere.
  • JonCummings · 1 year ago
Ooohhhhh, "Dirty Diana." Does anybody else smell a "Worst #1 Song of the '80s" nomination?????
  • DwDunphy · 1 year ago
    WAITAMINNIT!!

    Is this The Mod?!
  • deltablues2 · 1 year ago
I, too have mixed feeling about La Ross but she's certainly made the most out of her limited vocal ability. And many of her solo and Supremes tracks are stone cold classics.

With regard to Motown, they were never really known that well for producing consistent albums. They were mostly a collection of current hit singles and some filler, although much of that was good too. It was artists like Marvin & Stevie who pushed the "vanilla envelope" and began crafting entire albums as artistic statements.

I just remembered this, and I think you'll appreciate it, Matthew -- back when I was working at CNN in Atlanta in 2000, Diana Ross and the Supremes were a last-minute replacement to perform at the cable channel's big 20th-anniversary bash in June at Phillips Arena, which is right next door to CNN Center. Guess who they were replacing? Rod Stewart, who was having throat problems.

Actually, I had moved on to a new job by the time the birthday party happened, but I remember a former coworker who went to it saying that when Ross came onstage and some overhead monitors were showing close-ups of her face, she demanded they be turned off before she would sing. Feelin' old, Diana? I was still working at CNN that April when Rick Kaplan, then the network president and now the executive producer of the "CBS Evening News," came into the tape-editing area and announced in his scary, booming voice, "Everyone, Rod Stewart has agreed to perform at the 20th-anniversary party!" I bet he would've sung "Love Touch." But we never had the chance to find out ...

Diana has grown over the years and has mellowed. Most of what you hear you can take with a grain of salt. It's all rumor that has gone wild. To me, she's a music legend and an inspiration to many. After 45 + years in the industry, I'd say she did something right along the way.
GIVE HER A BREAK!! She deserves better than all the'did you hear....' stories. If you weren't there, you don't have the right to Rewrite History.
  • SupremeFanMan · 1 year ago
Sounds to me like the guy who wrote this shit just wants to fuck her! (While listening to her music.)
  • SupremeFanMan · 1 year ago
It's funny... all the postings that refer to Diana Ross as "la Ross" are written by fags! LOL!

Noboddy but a fag would call anyone "la Ross". LOL!

    ROFLMAO!

We bow before the fiery heterosexuality of "SupremeFanMan."
