Look! Miss Ross, has had enoromus impact of the music industry. I think it is an attestment of her strength, and body of work that she has managed to remained a sought after entertainer for so many years. Tell us, what other female entertainer, who is as sought after, at over 60 years in this most competitive industry! I was blown away at the prices, her tickets are commanding, people are paying to see and hear her. Amazing! Simply Amazing! Someone is jealous.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Exactly!

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Only 3! Didn't she put some great work out, with the Supremes! I dare to say 12 number ones in 5 years.. 1964 - 1969. The fans must have thought otherwise. My boyfriend was dancing with her friend, so I was told to sit down next to her. Not wanting to act like a sycophant, I introduced myself, and asked her name. She said, "My name's Loretta." Okay. Either I ruffled her feathers (by "not knowing" who she was) or she just didn't want to engage in chit-chat. I often wondered if she was nice or not.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

She's total garbage. Motown did not update all their past certifications. They did a few on the Temptations and the Supremes but not Diana Ross. RIAA certification program began in 1976. Berry Gordy was infamous for saying maying of his artist had gold records, when they did not; he promised in 1977 to have his company properly certified. Motown was brought up to date in 1979. Lady Sings the Blues was a #1 album, it never reached even gold status. This was her most successful album in the US & abroad. Her most commercially successful period as a solo artist was late 80 to 84. She would have 8 top 10 hits during that period. She would never again have a top 10 hit. She was able through the success of this album, and two other top 10 hits - Endless Love and It's My Turn to negotiate what was the biggest contract by a female at the time (20 million dollars) with RCA records. She managed 4 top 10 hits, one platinum and 2 gold albums with RCA - who dropped her when the contract was complete.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Thats why he is writing about her and not living a successful life of his own.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Thank you Lulu, this asshole doesn't know shit, I'm a male and i just don't get why people think that a tough woman is a bitch and a tough man is a smart business person. I was raised by my mother, grandmother and aunt. My grandmother left her husband and moved from tennessee to roch ny with six kids, and got a job and became the first woman in roch ny, note not the first black woman but the first woman period to own her own house. So as you see i appreciate a tough woman and feel that the world would be a much better place if run by woman. She had several million selling albums and singles before 1980. I love Marvin Gaye and his music but in the 1970s he publicly cheated on his wife Anna Gordy with Janis Hunter who was 16 or 17 at the time, put them both through the nasty divorce and later ended up marrying Janis and dragging her as well through his drama which included constant drug abuse.

Matthew, you could have inserted "Marvin Gaye" , "What's Going On" instead and done a similar article... or even more appropriately, "Matthew Bolin - PopDose, A Lesson On A Journalist's Asshole-ism."

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

It's disgusting the judgmental and unprofessional tone of this article. It's extremely sexist. Most male Rock icons have done far worse things and they're not judged that harshly. I wonder why someone takes time to try to destroy the legacy of one of the true trailblazers of the music industry. She has been the first female black popstar of the history of pop/r&b/soul. She opened a lot of doors for women in general. She's tough and have her standards, so what??? This article is disgusting... show some respect for a true icon.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

LOL... billion - Not... the woman never had a gold album as a solo artist until 1980, and had only one gold single. She was bit of a flop as a solo artist. Though she enjoyed stardom and kept that going in the 70's. He did at least give her credit for her singles. Roberta Flack and Donna Summer were far more commercially successful than Diana Ross as solo artist. So sorry Arthur but you are completely misinformed (when you even try with man-like success) - and Donna Summer was the first female artist (not just black female) to dominate the pop charts. Madonna would be the next...

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

This is a straight up bullshit article.

THIS is a more detailed, unbiased account:

http://www.popmatters.com/f...

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Diana is a very beautiful looking woman, (always have been), and her voice is almost certainly the most underrated female instrument in popular music; mainly because of mean spirited hate mongers like this "Mathew" idiot. She's a billion dollar international treasure, (even married one)! Even a-hole's like "Mathew" can't take that from her! We, the hoards of devoted fans always knew she was a "man" at heart! She's tough as nails, but with a lovely, feminine exterior. Only us men, for some reason, are allowed to be ruthless when pursuant of business and/or personal goals in this utterly HYPOCRITICAL/SEXIST society. Diana wasn't trying to hear that garbage however! That's why she achieved man-like success before Madonna, Ga Ga, even Cher, (Solo) etc! She's The Boss and don't you ever forget it, Mathew!

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Matthew Bolin is totally clueless. Try to make sure your tired claims have some validity. When I read something I know about and I see several mistakes, I question the accuracy when I am reading about something I'm not familiar that you've written. First of all, Diana didn't become lead singer because she became involved with Gordy. She and Gordy had no personal relationship at all until Diana and the Supremes had 4 consecutive #1 songs on the pop chart and a 5th single was heading there, too. In addition the "Where Did Our Love Go" album went to #2 for several weeks and remained in the top ten for a year. The Supremes with Diana as lead were an endless cash register that made Motown able to reach a level it never would have been able. Up to this point in 1965, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas didn't even have an album make the Top 50. They had some big hits, but that didn't transfer to album sales. The Supremes did well in both formats. Berry Gordy always wanted to have a big female superster that would crossover and reach insurmountable heights. Mary Wells was actually his main focus to take on this role. She had 9 Top 40 hits, including 4 that made the top ten and 1 that went to #1, "My Guy". After "My Guy" was released in March, 1964, it went to #1 in May, the week of her 21st birthday. Mary Wells had been married and was encouraged by her husband to not only renogiate with Motown, but try to get her previous contract, which was signed in 1960, when Mary was 17 voided. So, after "My Guy" reached the top, Mary became elusive and only spoke through her attorney. By the middle of July, Gordy realized he lost Wells and was devastated. The next month in August, 1964, "Where Did Our Love Go" went to #1 and by October, "Baby Love" was #1 on both sides of the Atlantic, at the same time, the album climbed into the top 10 and reached a million in sales by the end of October. By December, "Come See About Me" was the 3rd #1 in a row, while the album held firm at #2. Gordy realized he had hit platinum big time with Ross as lead. In addition to her talent, Ross had a work ethic that no artist at Motown could match.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Ross was made lead singer well before her affair with Gordy. At one time all three Supremes shared being leads with little success. Once "Where Did Our Love Go" with Ross singing lead reached #1, Gordy made her lead singer. Frankly, when I purchased their music, I never gave thought to who was sleeping with who. I liked Ross' voice and I liked the songs.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

your article about miss ross is complete fabrication, garbage just like you, anyone reading this drivel and beleiving it is sad, miss ross is a survivor and a real legend and is adored by her fans, your lies just make you look like the pathetic human being you are.

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

diana has one other great album "THE BOSS" produced by nick ashford and valerie simpson, which just preceded "DIANA". it was also successful , but not to the same degree as "DIANA" in sales. the album is the most coherent and consistent of all her albums, her singing is (arguably) the best and most nuanced. take a listen!

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

Here in the US we have always known that Ms Ross was not a nice lady.who slept her way to the top

Re: When Good Albums Happen to Bad People: Diana Ross, “Diana”

"Jigaboos"?
