Popdose: White Label Wednesday: Artists United Against Apartheid, “Sun City”

"Sun City" was the first song on a mix tape I made back in the day -- and it was the 12'' mix, too! On a technical note: Baker's production on that song really made my crappy car speakers sound a whole lot brighter. :-)

As much as the other charity singles brought the world together, this one had a fire and passion that probably made it a little scary for DJ's, as well. I love that Pat Benatar and Hall & Oates, artists considered too mainstream to be hip are included on this song. It shows that they are/were a little cooler than people give them credit for.

We have friends originally from South Africa who were talking about a trip they took to Sun City, had we heard of it? And my husband was like no, never. And I said, yes, yes you have, and started singing "I ain't gonna play Sun City". And the conversation stopped dead. They are still our friend, though. And I think they are U.S. citizens now anyway.

I've actually been there myself a couple of times. Landed a small plane on a huge runway in Rustenberg, and taught my girlfriend how to play blackjack at the casino.
