Love his first two albums, flawed as they were (he was only 19 or 20 when he wrote most of those songs, so I can forgive the "flaws"). I also like most of his other seventies albums, although they got more and more spotty. The Fogelberg/Weisberg 'Twin Sons' is a good listen if you're not close-minded to hearing something out of your comfort zone. They do a great job of melding a Hollies song with Laurindo Almeida's version of "Miserlou."

Don't believe everything rock critics have said about Dan (Dave Marsh and Robert Christgau were particularly brutal). They really threw out the baby with the bath water. I think Dan was an artist who peaked early, then lost his way when he started to sell a lot of records in the early-eighties. I for one didn't care for his eighties hits, but his early albums are a great mix of two different hybrids: singer/songwriter and country rock. "(Someone's Been) Telling You Stories" from 'Souvenirs' is a gem of a song (even if you hate the Eagles). It's in Drop-D tuning if you want to play along ;)

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

EightE1: Writer Teacher Corporate Wage Earner Evil Genius...and Philistine

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

I think you may have meant to leave this comment on another post, given that I didn't slight Fogelberg's musical abilities -- and I gave the album a positive review.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

I have never in my life read anything so musically misinformed as Mr. Giles article. Tin ear does not begin to describe it. Let's take Home Free just for starters. In "Be On Your Way," Dan sings it with a golden tone that is beautiful beyond description. His high harmonies are among the most beautiful I've ever heard. His vocal range is sick. (His high harmonies on his next album were called ghostly by Rolling Stone.) On "Be on your Way," I would call them angelic. It seems doubtful that Mr. Giles has the ear for such subtle beauties. (One of Dan's trademarks.) If you don't have an ear for subtle beauty, you don't get Dan. At the same time he is singing "Be on Your Way" with a golden tone, he is whispering. Try singing and whispering at the same time. Only Dan can do it. It's subtle yet incredible. Lets move on to Wysteria. In all of music history there has never been a song that resembles this song. It can not be defined. There has never been a song that is like it in anyway. It fits no category. Only Dan can do this. This comment only covers 2 songs on one album. I could go on and on. His Electric and acoustic guitar virtuosity alone is enough to marvel at. Only a musical tin ear could miss it. His musical precision on the guitar is legendary in the world of professional musicians. In the world of professional musicians, Dan is considered a musician's musician. Mr. Giles, your opinions of Dan shout musical ignorance to the world. Listen more carefully with an ear toward subtleties. Dan purposefully wrote subtle beauty for only those with a great ear to hear. So did Mozart.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

OK Jeff,
I'm glad you found the Album solid, and I was actually surprised myself. So many artists said what they had to say and then just tried to keep playing music regardless of the merit, because frankly what else are they going to do? I honestly wasn't expecting much under the circumstances but he surprised me. And I appreciate your candor.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

Me too....color me sanctimonious!

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

Dear Jeff,

I meant to write to you soon after your review of "Love In Time" first appeared, but never got around to it (so many teacher's conferences, so little time). I thought the chance had passed me by, but then I heard the party had revived itself, so here I am. When I began reading your review for the first time, I was preparing myself for the usual I'm-a-real-man-so-I-hate-Dan-Fogelberg diatribe, but you surprised me. I actually sent your review on to a few industry friends because I was so impressed with it; I can honestly say that it meant more to me than any other review I'd read. In our polarized society, where people take sides and defend them despite all fact or reason to the contrary, you actually took the time to listen to the music, weigh it's merits, and write your honest opinions about what you heard, disregarding your preexisting prejudices. I hope DanFans will take the time to read your review in it's entirety, and look beyond the opinions they disagree with, regarding past recordings, to focus on the many fine (albeit grudging), compliments you pay Dan and the CD. Personally, I don't think you're the insensitive creep you personate, but what do I know about real life and fiction? I'm just a pretentious widow trapped in a fucking heartbreaking Nicholas Sparks chapter.

Sincerely,
Jean Fogelberg

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

...well, okay since one definition of "sanctimonious" is being virtuous, I would say Dan was quite virtuous and I wasn't aware that was a bad thing. So, dotofoz...if this in fact happened...provide a link to the newspaper articles...or videos of the news reports...surely something like that would have found its way to YouTube? I don't believe you will post anything because it doesn't exist. What a sad, lame attempt for you to grab your 15 minutes of fame at the expense of Dan and Jean. What a sad life you must live. And by the way...Dan was human like the rest of us. I'm sure he made mistakes, we all do. But the point is, he tried to be a good person. He did much to help others and save the environment and contributed and worked for the many causes he believed in; he made his life count. Please re-think your choice to spread unfounded rumors about someone who did so much to help others. You only reflect poorly on yourself.

And bevallen, thank you for calling out someone who clearly weaves a tapestry of lies.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

Yeah! This keeps her in her quest for glory and sympathy in full force as well as padding her pockers using Dan's fame and fanbase. How ironic that she never mentions that Dan the saint crashed a teacher's conference in October 2006 in Raleigh, NC and at the end of the featured speakers presentation came down a side corridor to announce that he was madly in love with a third grade teacher! You should of seen the room clear out with about a thousand educators...LOL....I was there and heard he and his group of men and his wife were also seen at an educator's conference in Greensboro the same year following a group of teachers through a mall from store to store and even got into one teacher's face holding his wife's hand which frightened the teacher and security came out and approached them. It appears this happened only one year after he sent her the Valentine Song. You can check the NC newspapers about the Raleigh incident for verification...it was also on a tv station there....lol...Dan was also often seen in Fayetteille, North Carolina and also spotted looking at a house there for sale and in the mall. He also hung out at in the Carolina Beach area, too. Rumor has it that he was stalking a teacher for several years with and without his wife and that she was his puppet on a string and cover...so much for the Dan the angel theory...other people say they saw them in Asheville at Biltmore Estates, UNC hospital, and Southport as well at other places...wonder if all the songs on the new album were written just for Jean.... It's absurd, but other people noticed Dan in the Fayetteville, NC area AFTER his death...makes you wonder doesn't it? Guess he got out of the box after all......Wonder if the people from the living legacy know this?

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

Beautiful...Thanks

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

Dear God, will you FogelFans please let the man rest in peace, already?

And, by "him," of course, I'm referring to Jeff.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

I, for one, love the flame posts four or five months after the fact. But I was a musician in the 70's and Dan was very much appreciated in the musical scene because he was a fabulous singer, player of numerous instruments, composer, and performer. He also came from a musical family and actually knew musical theory, something lacking in most of popular music of any era, but in particular the post-woodstock era.

If you get a chance, listen to some of his live bootleg material. It's more than just music--it's amazing. Food for the soul. You can throw on AC/DC when your friends come over--knowbody else has to know.

Re: You Again?: Dan Fogelberg, “Love in Time”

I am not really sure where to begin with my response, so please bear with me and forgive me if I ramble on a bit.

I understand that you are not a DanFan or even an unbiased listener, you have made that painfully clear. But that is your right. Dan would have been the first one to say that. And I happen to believe that too. For the record I love most types of music and appreciate most artists' talent. I love the Beatles, Mozart, Michael Jackson, 80's new wave and Pink Floyd and most genres in between and around. Music makes me happy, makes me want to dance and sing along. I appreciate the creative talent these people put into their work, because I unfortunately do not share their talent.

But Dan Fogelberg...his music...his legacy speaks to me (and all DanFans) on a whole other level. If you go to thelivinglegacy.net and read the messages that people left for Dan (myself included) when he was ill, you will understand what I mean. His music, his songs...weren't "just songs"... these songs...Dan's beautiful, elegant lyrics and often moving music, gave many of us hope when there was none, or led us to hold on for one more day because Dan clearly understood our pain or confusion or whatever was troubling our soul. Many of Dan's fans are survivors of horrific childhoods/youths, they were homeless and victims of abuse and Dan gave them hope and comfort.

To DanFans, his music is very spiritual. On a personal level, I was abandoned by my parents and raised by my grandparents, "Leader of the Band" helped me say goodbye to my beloved Grandfather and cope with his passing, the "Exiles" album helped me through my divorce, "Same Old Lang Syne"... something eerily similar happened to me. "Part of the Plan" gets me through my darkest hours and "Phoenix" is my mantra. "Forefather's" makes me proud of my roots and who I am and where I come from and that I'm a fighter and will always survive. All of Dan's songs are about love, honor, kindness, truth, trust, respect and rising above situations and transcending them to be the best person we are capable of being. If you think these things are schmaltzy or not worthy of songs then I feel sorry for you.

Your own language in this blog entry speaks to either your lack of adequate vocabulary or a desire to come across as "cool and edgy". In fact, you only come across as a mean sort of "wanna be". Surely you can find a more eloquent way to “critique” Dan’s work. Surely if you are bashing a man that was nothing if not eloquent, you can rise to the same level of eloquence?

Dan had an incredible career spanning 5 decades (he began performing with a band and cut his first single in the 60's). He was successful and well respected in the music industry, most of his albums earning multiple platinum and gold status. Graham Nash on "Larry King" stated no one could harmonize or hit the high notes like Dan could. His talent and artistry are beyond reproach.

Dan was probably his own worst critic. He was true to his vision. And the reason he experimented in different genres? Well sir, it wasn't because his muse had deserted him. It was because, as with any artist, he didn't want to be trapped in one medium or period for his entire career. One need look no further than Picasso. His "Blue Period" was only a small part of his long, successful career. As an artist he experimented and grew. And those who appreciated his art, followed him, just as DanFans followed Dan.

If you must make fun of DanFans, please go ahead. I bear no shame in being a DanFan. I am quite proud of it in fact.

As a DanFan with a degree in English/Creative Writing with a concentration of study in Literature, I can tell you that Dan's lyrics stand alone as poetry, and not just any poetry, but truly beautiful, soul touching poetry in the vein of Byron, Keats, Shelley and even more contemporary, Wallace Stevens.

Forgive me if I don't grub around for the crumbs of approval that you have thrown out on Dan's final album which, make no mistake, was a gift to his fans for their loyalty. Neither I nor the other DanFans need your approval to tell me to like or dislike something. I have a brain and I think for myself. Dan touched my heart by giving us this final gift, which if you had really wanted to critique would have noted that the last note on "Birds" (the last song on his last album) was the first note on his first song "To the Morning" on his first album "Home Free". Many of us believe this was Dan's way of saying life is a circle and he had come full circle, not only in his music...but in his life as he was going from where he came. I can tell you that for me...and I suspect other DanFans it brings a fullness to his legacy, that I don't think many artists would have thought of, which again, speaks to his level of artisty and the courage he had to face the end of his life in such a graceful, bold, accepting manner...another reason I am a DanFan.

If you and your friends feel the need to bash Dan and his fans to feel better about yourselves, to feel like the tough, edgy, cool crowd, go ahead. I won't bash you. You're entitled to what you think and feel just as we are. It's just too bad you feel the need to make fun of the "Fogelfans"...by the way, we prefer DanFans...but then as a person who is clearly not a DanFan, you wouldn't know that.

Thank you for taking the time to read my response, and in spite of what it may seem, I do wish you well.

Regards,

Julie
