Popdose: You Again?: Winger, “Karma”

Two thoughts re: that promo video:

    (1) Shit! Kip Winger now looks like Warren Zevon!
    (2) The video would have been SOOO much better was doing ballet while laying down the tracks.

Rock Doritos. You wouldn't want Winger *all* the time, but sometimes you crave the Winger. And orange Winger-fingers.

... I don't know what that means. But it's grossin' me out right now. Also, because it must be said, "Four Leaf Clover" off Winger IV kicked some serious ass.

I've always felt bad anytime that I've trashed Winger. It's kinda like kicking a puppy, really. Upon re-listening to tracks like "Seventeen", "Madalaine" and of course "Headed for a Hearbreak" (which we all know was actually performed by Li’l Kipper) I've come to realize that while they are glossy, gouda-scented slices of pre-formulated pop-metal underneath were some decent tunes that I find myself listening to time and again.

I actually saw Winger live a couple of years ago. They were actually pretty decent live and had mostly original members which is always a bonus for bands of that era. During 'Seventeen' Kip changed the lyrics once to "She's only 35...." The ladies in the house seemed to like that.
Remember his song with Fiona..."You're Sexing Me." Yikes!

I seriously like the record and as I mentioned once and never said again for fear of ridicule - "Witness" is the best song they've ever done. I'm much more impressed than I really expected to be. And listen to that second song in the video (1:30 or so)- "Always Within Me" or something like that - if I close my eyes I could be hearing an Audioslave track.

Ok, so I watched the video here and one of the ones it suggested afterwards was Sandra Bernhard performing "Alone" by Heart with her 'dear friends Winger.' WTF!?

    a few things...

in a nutshell-winger was never a good band or even a decent band.they just sucked.and sucked outloud.just like trixter, firehouse, and the rest of the hair bands to get signed LAST before the bottom fellout.i never heard about his wife's accident,so i'm sorry to hear that no matter who it is.

i'm a musician and still a rock/metal guy from back then (and new metal now) but looking back at what i used to listen to,alot of bands were not that good.some musicians were good-the music was not.hello: dokken, ozzy after randy rhoads (give ot take),twisted sister (except stay hungry cd),alice cooper,etc...and all the lower level "metal" bands were just crap.what the PMRC deemed harmful to americas youth was and is NOTHING compared to anything that came out after nirvana or any rap artist.

lastly,i ran into kip winger once.i was working the namm show one year were i got to meet nicko mcbrain from iron maiden.so we're talking for quite awhile(and yes...his nose IS that big and wide) and at some point i raised my arms and put my hands on my waist.when i did i accidently elbowed some guy in the ribs.i said sorry and somewhat looked behind me but i didn't see who it was,or cared cause i was talking to nicko.when we finished talking i walked away with my friend, and he said i elbowed kip winger.and he said he walked away holding his gut.

    ahh,good times.

Kip Winger is one of the most accomplished, talented musicians out there. He has such an incredibly wide range of music styles, from the 80s Winger, to today's Winger, new album by Blackwood Creek,to his classical symphony "Ghosts" which is being presented at with the Tuscon Symphony Orchestra in November, and by the San Francisco Ballet. If you listen to the words that he writes, he doesn't write nonsense but from the soul and heart. Reb Beach is a guitar GOD, he's a maniac on Karma. I agree with a poster above who said that Witness is one of the best Winger songs, if not THE best, ever.

To you living room "rock gods" out there who think you are so wonderful and so talented, really? What have you written lately? Are you making a living at your "rock god-ness" or just someone who is jealous and can't get past playing for your friends dreaming that you're a superstar?

The thing is, Kip doesn't apologize to anyone for his choices. He does what he does, he has an extremely loyal fan base who supports all his endeavors. I saw Winger a year ago in Denver, Colorado and they rocked the house. Reb, John and Rod are still amazing and worth every CD sale and concert ticket out there.

Ha ha ha! I love it when people stoop to playing the 'jealous' card. What is this, grade school?

Wow - what a change - he was so hot and good looking on his first 2 albums - what happened? His voice sounds great, and the new tracks have peaked my interest!
